XTR vs XT vs Mavic

Regarding the AC hubs There light and cheap. My fronthub lasted me well. The lasted me through one epic and I rode with themm till halfway through the next( 30km is a long way to hike-a-bike through grootvadersbos) and the freehub was shot. If you use them for race wheels, cool. The rear hub flonges are quite narrow though so not for a heavy rider.

Regarding XTR wheels, I must say i am impressed seeing what some of my friends put them through. for a light weight wheelset they are strong( and expensive)

My personal choice regarding weight and durability( and slo including a bit of the bling factor) I would go for the Hope pro II hubs.

Ztr rims I am not so sure about.

I have had Hugi 240 hubs with DT rims - very strong and durable. Unfortunately they do not with stand brick walls - (long story). Now running XTRs and have to say I am enjoying them and they seem to be doing the job well.

  • 3 weeks later...

Thanks to this thread I bought myself a lovely pair of Shimano XT M770 wheels last week and I must say I am very happy!  I weighed them (just over 1,6kg) and with the cluster on I save 600 grams over my previous set, which I have to admit were crappy with noname Deore hubs (relegated to commuting work with semi-slicks).

It's nice to have a wheelset that has a great freehub sound and those red nipples.  Hmmmm, nice Big%20smile

Thanks for the advice!

Now, to really bond with those wheels you have to take them apart and see how they're made. More than half the beauty is inside.

Agreed....besides, I find bike maintenance to be highly therapeutic.

Spent 2hrs servicing my Chris King rear hub last week.

Can probably be done in 30minutes but I take my time.

Take them apart?Shocked  I am still enjoying the outside enough thanks a lot, and I fear I might not get them back together again.  Maybe in a month or two I'll give it a go.  Sounds like fun
