Energy Bar vs GU

Recommended Posts

all this is a bit confusing... where do you guys find time for snacks and unwrapping bars, patatoes, marmite sandwiches :), froot cakes.. what the hell LOL

i use gu when feeling good and know there is a big climb coming in about 8-10 mins.  generally about 2 a race (if any) and take some fluid if mouth is too dry.

Gu is just convenient' date=' not really worth the bucks. A banana's just as good I reckon...although crashing can be hell on your banana!!

Dates are also something to look at. They dont leave you with that syrupy sweet aftertaste that most gels do and are also very easy to carry.

The problem with most people is that they want all these products to work now and continue to work till the end. If you bonk on a ride it's too late to start taking something as it will only kick in 20-30 minute down the line. By then you have already dug into the reserves and the "fill-up" only fills your stomach. You should start eating while you are still in the starting pen. YOu might not feel hungry but youare refilling for an hour from now. The same thing with drinks. I'm always amazed how people breg about how they never get thirsty on a ride and hardly have anything to drink. It's not about thirst, it's about putting minerals and stuff back into the body.

I prefer gels in MTB XC races as they are quick to pop in. There isn't much time for chewing on a bar while keeping the bike under control!

In longer races I alternate between gels and energy bars/bananas/jungle biscuits/fruit cake/water melon etc.

BigBen....please excuse my ignorance but...wtf is a jungle biscuit??

Who is your supplier of choice - Joburg Zoo or Pretoria Zoo?

(Who knows they may be invloved in price fixing too)Angry
