The best way to be a better climber is to lose weight and practice hill climbing. So hill training will help. There are some long, but not technically difficult, climbs, particularly on day 2. You'll survive just fine with a good general fitness, but better conditioning will obviously allow you to enjoy the ride more. Cranky2008-09-30 01:14:18

Must we do lots of climbing in our training?

The short answer - YES.

It might be downhill but you still do a lot of climbing.

Day 1 - 1 193m of ascent

Day 2 - 1 850m of ascent

Day 3 - 880 m of ascent

Thanks for the answers so far guys.

I see there are a few of us doing it for the first time.

It sounds like a jol!!!

Let's say you're an average rider. You should then finish at around 12pm if all goes well. What do you do the rest of the day apart from cleaning your bike?

Damn! I can't wait.

Wazza - first you wash your bike, then you fetch your black crate, find your tent, unpack and shower, then you eat and drink, or snooze under the trees (too hot in the tents) to your heart's content. At night you get an awesome meal and entertainment in the form of highlights of the day's ride. Last year we even had stand-up comedy. It's a great experience.

This advise is all excellent but no one has asked the most important question. How on earth do you get there?<?: prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /> <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />Smile

My calculations show that it may be cheaper to drive two people from CTN than to fly there, but do I go via Bloem or take my life in my hands and drive the shorter route via Transkei.

Going through Transkei is more scenic but slower.

Bloem is less scenic and you have to deal with Vrystaaters. I think the danger is equally high.

flying is cheaper.

@r3-00 per Km x 3000km round trip you are R9000-00 in the hole...

I'm riding SANI2C just for the beer' date=' I heard it's really good. What are the prices like? (Do they take both Cash or Credit Cards??)

I gave you my frikkin secret recipe ...... Wink

I've done 2 Sani2c's on Kenda Nevegals.  They are great in all conditions.  They are fast rolling, but not as much as the CrossMarks.  In mud they will offer you much more bite than the Maxxis.

If you plan on getting a pair you have to start shopping now.  With both Sani2c's I struggled to get hold of them just before the race.

Easiest way for you to get there Chris is through the Transkei and from CT its a 1500 km journey. If you go through Bloem, its around 1650km.

As DR says, during the day, Transkei is fine, but at night its dodgy.
