Has anyone heard of any recent attacks on the Spruit? My mate just told me of two incidents of recent bike-jacking/thefts on the Spruit.

I just want to know how safe things are on the Spruit as I often frequent this route by myself thinking it was safe?

Hopefully not true ! smiley7.gif

Where about? I interviewed two cops yesterday that have a SAPS MTB patrol unit that tackles this kind of problem.

Oh, and to answer your second question, my wife and I ride on The Spruit most weekday mornings (after 08h30) and have never had any problems. But I must say that I'm always wary of the 'bush sleepers' as the cops call them...

Nancy Drew reckons she rides The Spruit on her own and feels safe.

I've been riding it quite often to and from work lately, and I haven't had any trouble. I did meet with a group of cops one day, about 8 of them. asked me if I've had any trouble. Didn't think of asking them if there had been any issues.

Any more detail you can share on this? Where do they patrol, how often etc? Where will the article appear? I'd be quite interested to read this.

It could be that I grew up in the rough tough south, so I don't scare easily (I went to school with the lebs after all)

I think it's always a good idea to pack a small can of pepper spray. I keep one in my car but unfortunately tend to forget when I cycle.

Sportsmans sells the ones that you velcro on to your top tube or stem. That way it is readily accessible in the event of an attack.

Are you saying we can avoid a-salt with pepper?

Not sharp enough to stab an assailant though!

Daggers are great until you're staring down the barrel of a stolen gun...

I reckon a CO2 bomb makes a good knuckle duster. If there's time/space, the front wheel makes a great weapon too!
