and shifters, brake levers, derailleurs. hubs, brakes, etc, could also be included.

i picked up this diamond back topanga for 55 canadian dollars in vancouver a few years back and the whole touring setup cost me about 200$ all secondhand(about a thousand rand back then). (that's only if you exclude the msr whisperlite stove!).

i put about 4000km on that baby with zero maintenance and only replaced one flat pedal that had cracked.

 

 

 

i now ride an XTR equipped superlight, where it costs more for a big blade than that whole setup was.

 

The point i'm getting at is, is that mountainbiking should be affordable. if its costing too much to maintain your bike, learn to do it yourself or (shudder) downgrade.

 

oh, and each kilometer ridden in the mud is equivalent to about 15 in the dry. so think twice about riding in the slop if you're worried about your bike.
