eyeware. What do you lot recommend? I'd like something that has inserts ideally, so when I wear my contact lenses, I can still use them. Also, what can I expect to pay?

Rudy Projects. NO two ways about it. i had Bolle's and now the Rudy's and the Rudy's are so brilliant it's un-freeeeking-believable.

confirmation can be obtained fromanyone who has used a demo pair at the tuesday night crits (Zoo and amateur have both tried them out)

You can try demo prescription glasses? I cant wear contacts and wont have an op. At 2k for a decent pair you dont want to fork out without trying them out.

I thought Rudy Projects had the option of actual prescription lenses? Is this not the case? Also those photochromatic whatsits that go dark in the sun and clear in the shade.

Dirtbreath, that's right, myne came standaard with a set of those lenses, the one's that go dark in the light ect. You can also have the lenses made up like prescription lenses but then you talking BIG bucks, think it would be close to R6k then, or just get the inserts, easy to replace or when you prescription changes eg. when you go blinder:-P

Some info I got from a optomitrest:

Ok let me give you some insight regarding prescription sports specs. Firstly, the prescription itself is an important component. Certain Rx lenses are better suited to frames with flatter base curves and smaller dimensions. This relieves the distortion and aberration problems caused by the curvature of the front and back surface of the lenses. Rudy Projects:   The Rydon is the only model that has a lens that is capable of being generated/surfaced so that it appears identical to the standard lens shape. The challenge here is to be able to cut the shape out of the lens blank with all the curves in place so that it clips into the frame properly. There is no machine with this capability in SA and therefore needs to come from Europe therefore costly. I don't know what your Rx is but there is also a limit to how much Rx can be manufacutered in this way. You are looking at about R 4000 to R 6000.
By far the more practical method is to select a model that will take the insert for 2 reasons:

1. The insert will take a standard base curve lens, therefore cheaper. and more distortion free. When your Rx changes in a year ot two, you just need to update that insert. Lens cost R 200 to R300 depending on Rx. This insert is metal (stainless steel) therefore durable.

2. When generating lenses with base curves in the region of 7 or 8, the edges may end up relatively thick, because as you move away from the optical centre of the lens, your lenses will change thickness . If you have near-sightedness and/or astigmatism, they will get thicker toward the periphery.......more distortion and also not great cosmetically.

Your medaid will pay a set amount toward frame and lenses. Most will cover ordinary cr39 (plastic) lenses which will be suitable for the insert. The frames in this case would probably not be covered altogether and you may have to pay in. This will vary according to the model choice.
However remember that if you look after these, they should last indefinitely

The D'Arrcs are a cheaper alternative. Optically not nearly as good. Inserts are plastic and the clip system is a weak point. BBB makes a similar one that comes with 3 interchangeble lenses and a plastic insert. Reasonable quality, but the plastic insert clip is again a weak point. Retails for under R400 excluding your Rx lenses.
I hope I have not confused you further.

Sorry to kind of hijack this post but has anyone had any experience with those photochromatic (?) lenses? Good/Bad? Waste/Worth the money?

How do you rate yours Marius?

I only have the insert Version Dirtbreath, but I like them but I do sweat ALOT when training hard and the sweat always go into my eyes. The have better ventilation than the Adidas Evil Eyes I had before these so the sweat evaporates a lot faster. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

They fit perfect, the nose pieces can be adjusted by yourself as well as die ear pieces so no need to take it back to the shop to have it adjusted.

The only thing I don?t like about them is when I look back to see if cars are coming I can?t see so lekker out of the corner of my eye since the prescription lenses don?t cover that part, I don?t know, maybe it?s just me.

I'd rate them 4/5 flaming chillies

ok, before i could no longer wear contacts (ie before the corneal grafts, back when i couldn't see properly) i had a pair of d'arcs - great cheapie specs, but they DO scratch. BBB are nicer (more comfy and look better) but they also scratch very easily.

i have the clear lenses and the dark tinted lenses with my rudy's and they are phenomenal. it is no lie that these shoo-wow's are scratch resistant... my mutts decided to knock mine off my face one day, and proceeded to run over them - and not a single mark.

i have tested the photochromic lenses (so glad the rep who brought the demo's to the crit also wears the kalyos) and man-oh-man if i had the bucks to buy some i'd need a few weeks (ok, months) to wipe the smile off my face. they are incredible.
