those are bad news! it is going to affect the sport negatively in the

long term, thank goodness for bike parks like northern farm, logwood,

etc, we definitely need more of them in joburg for a safe ride with

family and kids!

Anyone know where you get the one that attaches with velcro?

If my memory serves me correct, I think I saw them at Cycle Lab in Centurion last week but didnt look at the price.

Try give them a ring and check.

Yep, this kind of thing must be reported, preferably to the Randburg Police Station. They have a MTB patrol unit that is trying to make The Spruit and other public land in the region safer.

For future similar incidents of crime or even suspicion of crime, email Inspector Van Heerden on info at randburgpolice co za

where is the Sandton Cronicle?  Their clear concern for the community as detailed in previous articles on the spruit should warrant a front-page story.  Ja right...

Hi Hubbers

On Sat 11 October I became the third victim in 24hrs (according to Sandton Police Station) of an such attack. Two guys armed with knives caught me by surprise and pushed me to the ground and demanded my bike, helmet, sunglasses, shoes and cell phone ( which I didn't have). It was right by the 12th Avenue bridge and I had almost stopped to get through the little ditch where the pipes were dug up earlier this year. After they fled, I ran onto 12th Ave and flagged down a guy in a 4x4.

We gave chase North toward the N1 along the Spruit  and caught up to the one suspect who dropped my helmet and glasses etc. (The guy in the 4x4 still has these and I have no way of contacting him.) I then followed the other suspect who had my bike up the bank and along the N1 South, heading against traffic. I flagged down a second motorist, Graham Mc Cormac of Impi Teak in Rivonia. Graham was exceptionally helpful as he reversed along the N1 and drove the wrong way down the Rivonia onramp. the suspect continued North along the N1 South while we tried to ride ahead and return to cut him off. He had unfortunately left the N1 by this stage and we lost the trail. Thanks very much to Graham and the first motorist for being truly helpful Samaritans.

Stuff that was taken:

Red Merida TFS 800D hardtail

Cammo-coloured  Fox Helmet

Red Execustar  Shoes

Addidas Sunglasses.

I got a really good look at these guys as I was chasing them down and would be able to identify them. My concern is that because I chased them down (in instinct) the next time they try this tactic, the might try and disable the victim(s) so that they won't have a repeat. Please be very cautious as this seems to be a common occurrence at the moment.

We need to take action to clean up the Sruit as it's a wonderful facility that all should be able to use in a relaxed and carefree manner.

Cheers Ryan

Good work Ryan. Sorry to hear that you did not get your bike back. The fact that shoes and helmets are being taken could mean that somebody in the know is behind all this. Will keep my eye out for your bike. Can you post a pic?

Sadly I need to report that on my way back from the spruit on Sunday, outside the new bike park, my son and I came across Ali McLean who had just fought off a bike jacker at on Main Road where it crosses the N1, highway. The guy fled onto the highway with her wallet and cell phone.

This is getting worse and worse, Ali I hope you are ok.

The ironic thing here is that the Cyclelab newsletter is always highlighting the danger of riding on Main Road in that area.

So where can we ride now... Think there will soon be no where safe... I hate silly season in JHB. Oct, Nov, Dec are the worst months. Everything goes pearshaped...

Please be very careful guys and girls...
