Well said but it's a pity that only 2% of the users are on the hub. How many of the other users have even stopped to read the Ride rules at the entrances? There is a lot of riders that don't even know the kep left at all times rule. They come from the front and past you on your left (their right). I even had to tell one guy he's helmet is on backwards' date=' his buddy did not even notice it.

Where are these signs? Cant say I have ever seen them. Clearly not paying attention.

adele made reference to them in the latest edition of ride. she said she had more of them at her office, if memory serves.

Good words DV. I haven't ridden the spruit as much as some' date=' but I have seen good manners. Hog and I even chatted to a lady about her dog and then a horse came past. All smiles and greatings.Thumbs%20Up [/quote']

Could have been the lady with the dog's neighhhhbour...

Seriously though, I ride with a BBB bell on my MTB and it's a great way to announce your presence to other trail users in a non-threatening way. Ping-Ping!

What's the general rule on that little climb/descent to/from Republic Road - should descenders (going obviously at speed) move aside for ascenders or the other way around?

KEEP LEFT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, and which rider would then move off the singletrack, the ascender or the descender?

Trail ettiquette says right of way goes to the ascender.

I would say the descender. It's much easier for the ascender to just quickly get out of the way or stand still then the descender getting out of the way.

Thanks Johan. So then on a slope, the descender must move left, leaving the ascender freedom to continue as he/she was on the singletrack. Obviously within reason. Wonder if they move left or right of ascenders on northern hemisphere trails?

Ah, but what if the ascender is a novice that's unable to restart or remount on a singletrack climb? Surely it's easier for the descender to continue after a possible stop or dismount?

Remember I had a thread about discs v rim brakes, and the consensus was that most mtbers have very poor braking skills... your theory may end in tears...

And then the dog said to the horse "Why the long face?" LOL

I've been using the Spruit daily the last few weeks (except for this week - damn fluAngry) and a simple 'Good morning' while you're going off the path for the pedestrian and their dog does wonders.

Ja, the descender must move left or wait or dismount within reason. I forgot to add that the descender must also give way to pedestrians and horseback riders with the same rules applying.

I think the keep left rule applies in the NH as well, I've noticed that they keep left on escalators and pavements in the US as well as in the UK.  Perhaps it is the look on my face and the speed with which I keep right that they move over regardless of NH ettiquette?

On the Braamfontein Spruit there are one or two areas where this rule will be very handy if all users adhere to it. There is one little blind hill just off William Nichol I think.

Perhaps we need a sign there.
