Okay, back to the pedals. When I tried some Eggbeaters I got terrible knee pain when I went for a long ride. I would say partly due to the pedals and partly to my shoes. The soles are worn down so the sides do not make any contact with the pedal's sides anymore so my feet were rocking left to right.

Just my .02c.

I was having serious issues with my knees also, and the extra float in the eggbeaters sorted it out for me.

Typically though, knee pain is caused by seat height or cleat position.  In my case it turned out to actually be my seat which was about 6mm too low.

Yes Dawie and you are more prone to get knee problems with the SPD type pedals as there are not a lot of float on them and if your cleats happens to be incorrect it will damage your knees .

It might be the problem with cheap knock-offs or lower end ones but I've got more float with my XT pedals then I did with the Eggbeaters at 20 degrees and Looks with 15 degrees.
