If you want a no frills, cheap HR monitor consider the Forerunner 50. Its a watch unit that interfaces with the GSC-10 wireless cadence/speed sensor. It uses the wireless ANT stick to interface with the PC and is relatively cheap (R799 from Kalahari.net excl speed/cadence).

Despite being a Garmin, it does not have GPS, but do you really need it?

At the moment I have a Garmin  forerunner 305 with speed/cadence sensor and have been quite dissapointed.  Just a few things on the Garmin to consider.  You have to charge your battery often. If you ride every day it is a hassle.  Forgot to charge it one day on the epic and 3 hours into the next day nothing.  The toy was very nice for about the 1st 10 times.  I have since bought a blackburn delphi 6 and have found it gives me everything I need for around R1300(no calories though).  On the road I have a cs200 Polar and have found it to be very super reliable.  Oh and I have also had to replace the battery on the garmin strap twice this year.  Any buyers for the Garmin?

how much money are we talking for the 705 and does it include any extra's?

R6,200 from Cape Union Mart or R5,800 online from EasyGIS.

That package comes with the Edge 705, heart rate strap, GSC10 speed/cadence sensor, bike mounts and complete maps of all of Southern Africa.

I heard on the radio that if you buy 3 GPS's from CUM you get a fourth free. (who buys them in threes?). so i checked it out here, offer ends next wednesday:

If this is true, and you club together with 3 mates, then it'll cost you R4650 each.

Wait until the new Polar RS800G3 (has GPS) is available' date=' it should be here soon.

I think that both Garmin and Polar are excellent products, I would just go for Polar due to their brilliant aftersales service.

Are you experincing problems with Polar that you know about their aftersales service?

When was the last time you used web updater on your 305 unit.

Battery life issuse was sorted out, it was a software problem.

Battery indicator on the unit will display "low battery" but would still function for almost a day before running out.

One word...........Polar......no problems and great backup!!

Maybe a good product' date=' but so is Garmin.  Functions of Garmin trumps it though.

Problem with their backup (and Garmin's) is that you have to send the product to Joburg to get a battery replaced!  Pathetic if you ask me, but people in SA are so happy to just get any service they think that is good.  Go figure!

I took my Polar to  watch maker and he replaced the battery and sealed the watch for R45 a few weeks back...no problems

Garmin 305. Since the 705 came on the market, the 305 can be bought for around R3000.00 if you shop around...

I have a CS100 polar. The HRM picks up the flapping of your shirt and gives strange readings. Also not that splashproof. Had to go in for repairs after a drizzle.

Replaced it with the 305 and couldn't be happier. I can only imagine how good the 705 must be.
