Currently I am doing my hours for Epic - so doing the usual long slow heart rate training.

My question is: - if I only have a limited time in a session, say 30mins - 1 hr - do I still do the slow heart rate training or would the time be better spent doing higher HR interval type training? If so what interval training would be best to fit into my training programme?

Bearing in mind the goal of the Epic in mind...

Thanks

I don't know what else you doing, but I hope you doing more than 30mins - 1hour sessions? Hell, my active recovery rides are longer then that.

I'm not expert here, but I think you need those long slow Hr but they only help full if you going 4-6hours at a time. If I only had 30-60mins I'd do hectic hill repeats to wake the system up.

30min of training/session for "the" mtb tour de France. Phew is all I can say.

It all depends on your level of fitness and your "fat%" levels. If ur fit, go with intervals, if not...go slow and get some basic fitness first.

Confused  then sell your entry or something... you will be very un-happy if you go that un-prepared...

Maybe I should rephrase the question....

When I do not have time to do the 3-6 hour rides (outside the 2-3 times a week and 1-2 times on weekends) I ride to and from work , which can take between 30 mins and 1 hour depending on the route I take.

For these rides is it best to try out interval type rides or stick to HR based training?

High week on polar trainer  this week - 18hrs - so hopefully I am doing some good! Big%20smile

Epic is all about endurance -  and very bit of training helps! Train with your partner and make sure you race at the same heart rate level that you trained - it will come back and bite you if you don't!

That makes more sense... outside of the long rides, I'd say hit the intervals till you bleed...

I see! Ok, then you got the enduro part right but you also need some hill / interval training and Tempo riding, can't just do one thing. Do some hard training rides and use the 30mins rides to work as you active recovery rides.

Hi

I would recommend  for 30min a flat out TT. for  1h do 2x20min intervals. This way you will be building your aerobic capacity, which is a much bigger return than 30min to 60min just riding..

Alternate SSI intervals (10-12min) x 3 @ 70 - 80% Max hr.

with LT intervals (2min) x 10 @ 80 - 90% Max Hr on alternate days.

I did this last year combined with sprints and LSD rides (4-6hrs) and had a great Epic.
