Hello i'm new.

Didn't see any FAQ section so i guess i'll have to post

to get some advice.

I'm looking at starting cycling onroad & maybe doing a Mountain trail once in a while.

I have a budget of about R2000 for a Bike.

its not much but i'm sure i can always upgrade components right?

Dont wanna spend too much as i'm worried i might not like it & end up selling after a month Unhappy

Can you please give me some Brand suggestons with approx Prices?

A friend of myne suggested this:

Are these any good?

Also should i stay away from Raleigh? There's a nice one at Mr Price Sport with Disc Brakes going for R1900 Big%20smile yay or nay?

dont buy a new bike. you'll only get crap for 2k. look on the hub. there are lots of bargains going around. I recently sold my raleigh RC6000 with shimano 105 for 3k, so there are bargains out there

there are a few decent bargains out there and i am sure you will pick one up here a mountain bike is good for both types of riding but maybe look at a road bike in the mean time for that budgetturtlek2008-11-10 09:47:44

Thanks for the Replies.

I'll definatly have a look at the bikes for sale here in the Classifieds.

Problem is i'm not familiar with the Brand names Confused

i think Road bikes are more expensive than MTB?

So i'm looking for a MTB so i can do some mountain trails on the weekend

once i'm fit enough.

How much more should i save up for a nice 2nd hand MTB?

Dude if you are a beginner, rather get a MTB. When my g/f started riding, put her on a road bike first. She hated it. Put her on MTB she loved it. Easier to ride, you can ride where the cars and traffic aren't while you figure out all the mechanical engineering that is a bike, while you puncture and fall and lose your chain etc...far better. Fat tyres means easier to ride, stance on the bike easier (not crouched over the handlebars like a loon).

Exactly the same thing happened with my best mate. He tried road once, hated it, tried MTB once and is hooked.

G/f has progressed to road as well now, and loves both. Same with best friend - he is now keen to try road after MTB-ing for about 6 months.

And go with the other advice, look for a good 2nd hand bike, you'll get far more value., If possible have a friend in the know help you find something. Good luck with the search; be persistent too, as cycling becomes fun when you get fit and get to know the bike. Most NB...love the ride!!!

dont worry about not knowing if campy is better than shimano (yes it is), or if tubbies are better than clinchers (no theyre not). If you want to know something, just post a question and ask... you'll have hundreds of pages of porn before you know it. And maybe even a meaningful answer

cyberjays, what jughead is offering is a perfectly good bike for a beginner (or intermediate even)...check that the size is OK for you and haggle with him for a price...

raod bikes are cheaper than MTB. There are just a gazzilion more road bike veriations to choose from and more stuff you can add.

look at a 2nd hand bike for arount 4k. you will find something decent for that range and wont have to upgrade very soon.
