I also find the climb just after the picnic area along the Heidelberg road hard. Dunno why' date=' but that one always hurts me.

I agree that hill seems to bite back although it is one of those hills that seems to get easier every time you do it.

Slave, I am intrigued with your gear ratios, please confirm what ratios you were riding with front and back?

On the front I have 52/ 42 chain rings / blades. On the back I have a 9 speed 11 / 22.

Thanks GO... quite possibly adequate' date=' but is there anything I can do to make it EASIER? [img']https://assets.bikehub.co.za/legacy_images/smilies/smiley2.gif[/img]

A Ducati!!!smiley4.gif

smiley36.gif Hey Nance. I had a big panick attack before the ride because I believed that the others were right about my ratios and that I would suffer.

I'd be the first to admit that it wasn't easy on the 42 / 22 ratio that I used and I had to stand up a lot because I lacked the strength to peddle while seated.

I have to say though that it really wasn't a bad ride. In fact I quite enjoyed it and on the last of the inclines before turning back for the car park, I raced off to beat two other cyclists to the crest. So I still had a bit of energy left on the tank.

One thing I learned from that ride is you actually have to experience it for yourself to judge the degree of difficulty. Having experienced it myself, it was nowhere near as hard as I thought it would be. It's still not an easy ride, make no mistake.

I think you could make it. Not sure of your ratios but it's more about what you are able to do. Ratios and other technical stuff just confuses the issues.

I can recommend a ride in the nature reserve though. It really was a great ride and the company was great too. Very supportive and helpful.

I think we need to make a plan and organise a day at Karee Kloof for the whole family and do a biggish ride through the reserve and have a braai afterwards.

There are facilites for the kids to keep them amused.

Think about it and let's plan a few dates to work around. We can get a bunch of hubbers together, ride and have a quiet gallon of beer / wine afterwards.

Maybe sometime in August when it's starting to warm up.

Slave' date=' why is everybody picking on you ???[/quote']

Kid screaming in from left field to defend the Slave. Thanks dude.smiley4.gif

Maybe because I'm so vocal and open myself up to it?smiley19.gif

Or maybe they are battling to comprehend that I did the reserve in a reasonable time on heavy gear ratios.smiley18.gif

Did I smokkel a few koppe?smiley5.gif

Ok this is gonna be a real girl question so don't laugh at me....

does 42 / 22 represent the number of teeth on the small ring in the front and rear respectively?
Posted

Yeah Nance, it sure does.

Most bikes I know have 39 tooth small chain rings so mine is a tad bigger.

Then I seem to see a lot of 25 tooth "large" cogs /sprockets on the back. No matter how hard I try, I just can't get myself to spin that much although it would make the SBR a breeze.

Lately, I have been using much easier gearing to trainmyself to spin and I have gotten soft and lazy. One needs to have a fair bit of power too and since I lack the raw speed, I need to work on both.

Hopefully, my ride in the reserve was enough to put some cycling currency in the  bank. All part of my training effort to do a sub 3 94.7 later this year.

Joe, (anyone really) I have heard from a training buddy that I will never be able to do the Shova on my current gearing. Since SBR, I am not inclined to pay that one any mind, but I would like some opinions anyway. (And then go out and prove you wrong.)20090602_005842_crackup.gif

'Shova is 105kms and the ascent is 1,160 mtrs; SBRand is 57kms with an ascent of 1,230 mtrs.

There is nothing as steep on the 'Shova as in the reserve, so you'll be fine.....in a completely stuffed kinda way.

Slave, what did you do to these people on the weekend ?

Joe is setting you up so he can sit back and have a good laugh, you must have done extremely well as it seems everybody is jealous.

GO is putting is bike up for sale, Slave did you drop GO on the steps on Sunday ?

Tx Joe.

So, a few more spins around the reserve and I am snorted for the Shova.

There must be someawesome decents there too. It must be ama-ziiiinng to go down Inchanga, Bothas hill, 45th cutting and fields hill. I remember those from doing Comrades (up run.)

'k back to my question, anyone into a big hub get together / ride in SBR sometime mid to late August?

No, it was the other way around on the steps Sunday. GO left me for ....

Aks Dom. I got crazy chasing and racing some moegoes on the Eye of Africa road and blew badly by the time we hit the steps. On top of Saturday, it was just too much for me to come back fromso I just ambled up there on Sunday.

Those lifestyle choppers werespoiling for a fight (according to GOv2.0) and he was just the man to drop their ass up the steps. Even my energade couldn'tdo it for me.

But watch this space. That ride in the reserve will pay dividends sometime soon and then I will give it some stick on those steps.

Looks like we'll have to have a word with bird man. Something has attacked his brain. How can he sell the Prince? That's just so wrong.

Ill be in for the ride through the reserve

Thinking seriously about riding it a couple of times in next 2 months or so

that ride 4 sight stuffed me up so badly last year, I wanna be ready this time round

That's the spirit Trubie. I'm not sure I can go at quite your speed but let us know when you plan to do the reserve and I'm sure you'll get a few guys who would want to tag along.

I'm keen and I think a few others might want to go too.

That's if we are still allowed to ride with you.
