The plane truck / cyclist (and other mishaps) incident: http://www.triathlonsa.co.za/Public/ViewNews.aspx?id=202

Hummingbird, good luck with the race! Just keep your wits about you and run/cycle/swim your own race, and forget about the planes.

Take water sachets aplenty at the watering points and use that to cool yourself down with (over your head, down your back, onto the legs), do not drink too much as it will just slosh around in your stomach when you get to the run, making you feel queasy!

GO (virgin 2 point oh.)

Glad to hear the shop is almost ready. I wish you only good things with your venture.

Please enlighten me here.

The session I'm planning is to just sit upright on the bike. (firmly attached and locked into the IDT) It is all about getting the legs working again. I do not plan to put any weight onto my amrs, so the ribs will not be abused in any way here.

As far as the exercise goes, I will only push as hard as feels comfortable. I know if I do stupid stuff then the recovery phase will just be longer and I will probably do more damage than good.

I need to start working again (on my fitness) and I am getting very frustrated because I can't ride. I'd love to do the road and ride properly but that would be very foolish. Dumb@ss I may be but foolish, I'm not too sure.

Bearing mind that this is a serious compromise since I hate the IDT. That mind numbing boredom just gets on my nerves.

Don't worry Humming Bird, I will cancel my flying lesson! Just joking!

Predictor, let us know if you get a late entry. Would be good to see you at the race!

Slave...if your riding intensity is too hard, the amount of work you lungs do can cause great discomfort to the broken/recovering ribs. I always go with the adage of, wait until the Dr says your 100%...and then still give it an extra 2days.

Your gonna be working your way back to fitness anyway you look at it...

A cyclist got hit by a plane? Ok...thats really arb!

Hummy...just go give it the beans dude. Stop stressing about it and just enjoy it. In the words of Aerosmith "Get over it"...

Slave' date=' I'm gonna give you a public blasting here dude. Getting on that bike so soon with those ribs is foolish bud. I know your itching to ride, but its still too soon. My 2c worth.

If any of you are interested, the Colnago shop is almost ready! They were doing the last of my painting/work today!

I would liken fitness to being like rowing a canoe up a flowing river. When you stop rowing, you go backwards. Then to get back to where you were takes a lot of hard work.

The longer I rest, the longer the road back.

I hear what you say 'bout the ribs and the plan is not to do damage. Just a light pedal turning session to begin a gentle road back. It may not get me back to where I want to be but at least I will slow down the rate at which I am going backwards.

Also I have great fear of the bike (or rather falling off it) and I need to tame the beast.

Better to do it on an IDT where it is safe.

Ha ha! Don't know how true that is Mr Slavey... After just a couple days off (4 or 5 i think it is) you lose 33% of your fitness... Sorry but I think you'll be starting from scratch either way...

As GO says, rather wait until you're 100s

Not very true that Kieran. It means that you cannot do any decent tapering for a race...

You only start loosing fitness after nearly two weeks of playing couch potato.

However, training does more than just enhancing you cardio system. With correct training, you will grow more blood supplying veins to the muscles, and your general health will increase.

Laying of for 3 months WILL have an effect, however you will start from a higher point than that where you started at initially after many years of doing nothing....

Where were you Sunday past? I did a 90km MTB cycle, just less than half of it solo! smiley6.gif

GO. I would love to come see your place. What are your "office hours" going to be? You going to work bankers hours like I do?

Kieran, I was told that your muscles have a half life of about two weeks. Meaning that after two weeks, I would have lost half my fitness. Another half after another two weeks and so on.

Sometimes I think that I should maybe wait a little longer, and then I cough. Now that  cracks me up, but not as much as sneezing. Yesterday was unfortunately one of those miserable days when it all hurts no matter what you do. Had to run for the pain meds, so I have decided to take it easy for another week at least before hitting the IDT.

As if to confirm this, the gods of garage doors have conspired against me and I cannot get into the garage right now to even get the bike on the IDT. So maybe, just maybe, this is the answer. (For me to stay off the bike for another week.)

So, tomorrow morning at 05h30, when I wake up, I shall again be miserable knowing that most of my buds will be heading out to meet somewhere for a really cool ride. (Unless of course it's chucking down.) Same again on Sunday.

You have no idea how much I miss the sound of bike drivetrains and tyres on tar. Such simple things that can make life so pleasant. I miss my weekend rides like you will never believe.

Slave, take another weeks rest, when looking at the big picture a week will be a small sacrifice.

And tomorrow wake up at 10am instead of 5:30 and you'll feel much better.
