Almost all cranks are forged (maybe some cheapies are pressed). Dura-Ace is cold-forged though, which allows less material to be used for the same stiffness. Any difference in durability (which I don't think there is any) is not related to the forging process, but the design of the part.

Don't hesitate about your decision on the 105. This is the workhorse of Shimano, has the same trim functionality of the Ultegra and DA (ie, you can adjust the front derailleur to prevent the chain rubbing by pushing gently on the lever), just weighs a little more, ie you would finish the 94.7 about 45 seconds slower, if that, and is actually more durable than the DA or Ultegra. We get DA, Ultegra, Record and Chorus because we can, and because of the brag factor, and big toys for big boys syndrome. But anyone can hold their head up high with 105, which anyone who really really knows will tell you is totally underrated. 105 ranks with Veloce (Campag) and SRAM's Rival.

 

Price wise 105 is a no brainer. You can get 2 for the price of one DA, and nearly two for the price of Ultegra.

 

But don't touch Sora or Tiagra. These are the supermarket special gruppos and on the LBS low end bikes, and using them is like getting a good ride from a grunt, but you would keep her out of the public eye as much as possible.....  .

Will have to go over to 10 speed in the near future just because of lack of availability of parts.

Same reason I'm changing, plus I can swap out my flat wheel for the 10-speed tubby in the support car?

Mudda. I weigh close to 100 kg. Half a kilo saved on groupsets is really not an issue to me. Plus my current bike is 12 kg. Not sure what the new frame will weigh in at' date=' but being a metal frame, I guesstimate maybe two kilos less.

 

How much difference would half a kilo make to a race?

I have the perception that campy is pricey stuff. Maybe I?m wrong. Given the popularity of Shimano, parts availability should not be much of an issue for some time to come.

The best comparison I have seen between Campag and Shimano was on the Hub, before your time S2L. Perhaps someone can post the photos of the Campag woman and of the Shimano woman, so you can get a clearer idea of the difference.

Where exactly did you find this comparison table Yang?

 

The bicycling mag handbook had a very different version.

 

From what I have experienced, SRAM's rival outperforms an Ultegra groupset as far as performance and reliability is concerned. And for the weight weenies, even the old '07 Rival is lighter than the new Ultegra SL.

I cannot dispute any of the tables here 'casue I just dunno.

 

This is why I asked about Shimano and not a comparison between Shimano and Campag.

 

A pleb like me can probably just about stretch it to 105 and that's where I'm gonna aim.

 

Anything will be a big upgrade on my 18 year old Shimano components.

 

All I want is a 3 hr 94.7. Winning it is just not within the realm of reality for me, no matter how much I delude myself.

 

We get all specific about weight and grams her and there, but like I said, A few grams here and a few grams there, no biggie for me.

 

My current bike is 12 kg and I am close to 100. I'll probably need 105 to take the weight.

chosing a groupset (or even a bicycle) is easy.  Get a budget from the wife.  (normally approved after watching a chic flick with her)  add about 10- 20%, round up to the nearest R100.

 

Shop within this budget and buy the best you can afford.  Then ignore all other advice and cyclists on the premise, what the eyes and ears do not see or hear, cannot distress the heart.

 

If you like Japanese products buy shimano,

if you like Italian products buy campy,

if you like American stuff buy SRAM.

If you like Token freek buy Token.
