Switching hydraulic lines on LX brake levers

How difficult is the process of switching the hydraulic lines from the left brake lever to the right brake lever and visa versa on Shimano LX '08 brakes?

A friend neglected to get this done before buying the bike and we have to do it now. Standard issue, left brake is the Front brake. Due to motorbike influence, we ride with Left being the rear brake.

 

From what I can ascertain it is simply bleeding the system to avoid spilage and then removing the pipe from the lever, attaching to the other lever, filling and bleeding. Am I missing something, eg. seals that might need replacing, o-rings, anything like that?

Mud Dee, do you mean remove the lever put it on the other side...?

The LX levers unlike the Haynes, Avids are side specific. The reservoir faces up on the LX. Hence simply moving them from one side to the other is not an option (aesthetics wise).

No. You remove the hose where it attach to the lever. I think you need a 7 or 8 spanner? Then just switch the hoses over. Keep the hoses and the levers elevated to keep them from leaking.

I'll personally pin a Noddy Badge onto anyone who can swap lines like that and have an outcome where no bleeding is required. That takes some doing.

 

The slightest bump as you move the open line will break the surface tension on the oil and cause a bubble.

 

But, give it a go.

 

I suggest you get yourself some clear fishtank pipe, a syringe and some spare oil before you do the operation. You don't want to spoil your Saturday ride due to air in the brakes.

So dont bump it then. I've dont it more than 3 times without problems. But like you said, bleeding it is very easy. You can do it to be safe.

I have done it a couple of times as well, no problem. I have done it on the new XT earlier this week; piece of cake.

Have swopped hoses manytimes without having to bleed the system afterward.

You may be required to top up he oil afterward but no bleeding required at all.

 

When swopping the hoses make sure you tape the hose to keep the open end higher than the caliper, then no air will move toward the caliper.

 

Once the swop over is completed, a few pumps of the lever should sort out the air bubbles just below the master cylinder.

 

Done, go drink some whisky
