Boksburg Boneheads

I just witnessed yet another reason why cyclists get a bad name amongst motorists....

Driving back from the airport (in JHB by the way, not EC), came up behind a bunch (+- 20) along rondebult rd, heading towards Rietfontein rd, away from the East Rand Mall side (U know who u are!) - they were about 6 abreast but thats beside the point. went around them and stopped at the robots a bit further along (cnr Rondebult & Rietfontein).

Now,call me a pessimist, but i anticipated what happened next so was watching carefully as these morons went straight through the red robot.

the part that grinds me though, is how they did it-  firstly, they swarmed all over the road, going past on either side of the car, and secondly, they all went through barely looking, all trusting the front guy who gave them the signal!

Angry This bonehead didnt even check the intersection!! He took a gamble with other ppls lives!!Angry

now i appreciate it was 6am on the 2nd of Jan, so the roads are quiet but i have a little message for these guys, but particularly for the guy who was in front:

It doesnt matter if the roads are quiet - it takes 1 car to kill a cyclist!

When you cockily signal for your mates to follow you through a red robot, remember, its not you who gets hit, its the poor dude at the back of the bunch who has TRUSTED you, and you've taken that trust and used it to gamble with his life!

Ppl who ride at the front the whole way through a ride are very admirable blah blah blah.....but that spot comes with responsibilty... if you cant handle it, or dont have the maturity to...bugger off and ride by yourself as far as i'm concerned. Until then, i'll ride by myself, cos at least i know i'll be riding with someone i can trust....

Did someone get hit?

How do you know the front guy took a gamble, where you riding in front with him...

I understand your frustration with the bunch riding six abreast but i think the last part of your thread was a tad subjective towards the guy at the front...just my view, I wasn't there though.

Don't you guys know that you can not get in a proper training ride if you have to stop at evey light and stop street. That is according to one of the presenters on Super Cycling.

I realise that, I ride with that bunch often and there has never been a time I've felt unsafe passing through robots. I think the last part was subjective that's all...those guys know the route well, they ride it often, the guy is from the EC, at 6 in the morning P**sed off because the guys were riding 6 abreast (the whole road), think maybe he went off on a tangent...just my opinion.

There is a rotten culture in South Africa with laws being broken by just about everyone.

Why should it be okay for cyclists not stopping for a red traffic light but not for me on my motorbike or for Sipho in a 56 000 kg truck carrying toxic waste.

Wouldn't it be nice if Metro Cops decided to enforce the laws and nail cyclists who ignore flaunt the rules. But because no one is being punished the problem will get worse until it becomes like Cairo where traffic lights are ignored all the time and by every road user.

Dude, read my post pls....I had no problem with them riding six abreast (and that was just a loose estimate)...the road was quiet, and there are two lanes so plenty of space to pass.

I was sitting at the robot in my car watching them approach...thats how i know they took a chance. i watched the front guys on purpose to see what their reaction would be to the fact that the robot was red. As expected, they cruised through.

Just because these guys know the route well doesnt mean they know the traffic patterns of the area....

And yes, i may live in the EC now, but i lived in Boksburg for 18years, and i know the routes as well.

i have no personal problem with the guy in front...i'm just asking that guys who, in general, ride towards the front of any bunch take a bit more responsibility...theres a whole bunch behind them relying on them....

I fully agree with Rhodent. Why should a car or motorcycle user be forced to stop and we have full licence to be idiots?

If you are in front and signal to the group to go through a red robot you should seriously consider what the heck you are doing on a bicycle. Or, fine, signal but then stop in the middle of the intersection and wait for the last person to cross safely - that way if they get hit, you get hit.

Red means stop!!!!!AngryAngry

relax guys it is a new year and we do not want cyclists to be killed on our roads; cyclists demand respect from motorist but in order to demand respect you as a cyclists also have to show respect to motorist .... we as cyclists only have ONE life and we can not gamble it with cars on the road ....

In all seriousness, is a bike ride worth your life?  I dont care who I'm riding with, if the robot's red I stop - and if you're wearing Westgate Wheelers kit and you jump a red robot you are asked to return your kit and your membership is terminated immediately.

Guys, to risk your life for the sake of a bike ride proves your immeasurable stupidity.

My 20gazillion Zim dollars worth. Have a moerse lekker 2009!
