Saw this in the paper. The highway thing puzzles me. Lets be honest - we should not be cycling on any road designated N. But on the other side, these roads all have a wide shoulder with enough place to easily ride three a-breast (which will make six breasts if you choose your training partners correctly, sorry) I digress - with such a large margin of error, is there not a bit of mal-intent here?

Anyway, Barend, just so glad you're OK buddy. You're a talented youngster and to loose you to cycling and life would have been a great loss.

No way. This is NOT A HIGHWAY.  The road is not even mark with a N (MWNN we can discuss this over braai some time).  That is a municipal road that.  I once got crapped out by a police lady on that same road because I was using it.  When I confronted her at the next traffic light, I asked her exactly in her opinion did I do anything wrong or illegal.  She stuttered got that lost look in her eye, realised I did nothing wrong and just drove off.

THis is one big problem in this country.  People who are at the bottom of the "food chain" are put in positions to uphold the law.

As this was discussed a few hundred time and I was one of them saying this, I realised that one of my training rides is on a N road. It's part of the N14 in Krugersdorp. The "highway" only starts at at Avianto/Muldersdrift turn-off going north but going south west it turns right at the big 4way intersection towards Hekpoort road and the Venterdorp road. There's no way you're gonna keep cyclist of that road.

In a case like this, if you are knocked off your bike and are still lucky enough to survive, do you claim from the guy's motor insurance company as would happen in the case of a motor accident for a replacement bike?

Wonder if the cop and his boss are going to be in meetings today, and tomorrow etc etc...

Concerning the N road thing - you can ride on an N road as long as it is not a highway. This has been discussed before...

And by looking at their kit you're doing a hell of a job!

Just thinking about what I could ride were I not also managing/financing/transporting/coaching/educating Little Ben (Aka Byron)?

Dreams, but hopefully all this will lead to something good for the little (ok so not so little!) guy and he makes a success of it. I know that many other parents have or are going through this so ja I'll just hang in there.

Not that I'm riding too bad stuff mind you!

Jedi, you claim from your insurance company.  They will then counter claim from the "third" parties insurance company.  Hopefully the other company will pay out, but, from previous experience and having worked at an insurance intermediary, the odds for a payback is about 35% of all 3rd party cases.

Buff,

We buy locally through Westdene Cycles.

Importing 'Dales proved to be a very very cumbersome process...

Shipping bikes bought on EBay from the USA is very Expensive as well, sort of negates the price saving...

Talking about insurance, what should one expect to pay per month to insure a say R20k bike.  Would it be covered in a race situation??
