Difference between the Groupsets

Recommended Posts

Im in the process of changing my cassette from an Ultegra 11-23 to Ultegra 12-25/27 and got some offers for a 105 12-25 cassette as well

So i was wondering, not only in my instance, but in general

How big a difference is there in the groupsets?

Like between Sora & Tiagra, Tiagra & 105, 105 &...  etc.

And how does it affect a bike if you are using mismatched components on your bike.

I have a FSA Gossomer 39/53 crank

Are the mechanisms different or is the change mainly in weight?

The cheaper stuff is 9 spd but the all the 10sped stuff is compatible. It's basically comes down to weight saving, both on the bike and in the wallet. A 105 cassette is perfect for 105/Ultegra/DA.

Dude there is no difference in mechanics at all i race on a dura ace cassette4 and train on either an ultegra or 105 cassette depends on which wheels i feel like riding

my other components are a mix and match of ultegra dura ace and 105 so the main difference is the materials used and the weight not much else

there is no danger to you or your bike if you mismatch components on your bike

I read that the new Dura Ace 7900 cassette, chain and chain rings are not compatible with other Shimano 10speeds (Dura Ace 7800, Ultegra and 105).

Something to do with the new design of the chain.

for starters it would be really silly putting 7900 chainrings on an Ultegra or 105 groupset. It will look kuk. I think the casette has slightly different notches and does not fit the Ultegra or 105 hubs/wheels. But you can use it on Ultegra or 105 if you use DA hubs or wheels. A chain is a chain is a chain.

I have a DA 7800 gruppo. My DA cluster is on my racing wheels and have an Ultegra cluster on my training wheels. It is a lot cheaper and harder wearing than the DA cluster.

so then why would you go for a DA if the Ultegra is cheaper AND harder wearing?

Doesnt make sense to me...

Maybe because the Ultegra is harder wearing so lasts longer than the DA one and is cheaper? Since one is doing a lot more k's in training than in racing (or at least should be ....) and weight is not 'that' important unless it's the famous ICG every morning race ........

Wait till the weight weenies get wind of this one.

Do yourself a favour and do a search regarding groupsets.  This has been discussed ad infinitum

The DA cassette came with the gruppo. When I bought the racing wheels I moved the DA cassette to them and bought an Ultegra cassette for the taining wheels. To replace a cluster and chain at almost 2k everytime is a bit steep. That's why I use Ultegra for training.
