Geoff Bike Carriers

Geoff Bike Carriers are made by Hanler Products. They also make Bike Caddy products. Many cyclists use their products. We have used their Geoff Carrier to successfully transport our Tandem to Mozambique, Malawi and ARGUS. We will do so again in a few weeks time. I phoned them from Angola to enquire about a number plate holder with brake and stopping lights to attach to the carrier. Their reply was that they do not make them any more as there is no demand for them. It also seemed if they did not care if a cyclist gets apprehended.

There is a R500-00 fine if you obscure your number plate. Are they not selling an illegal product if they do not sell the number plate tail light assembly as well. They should at least have a warning that such lights is a legal requirement. I wonder how many cyclists are going to get a fine down to Cape Town ..... and when coming back!!!!!!

Does anybody know where you can buy a number plate/tail light combination in Pretoria or the West rand?????

Good point. After reading something here on the hub a little while back about that I am refusing to use my holdfast rack as there is no place to put the numberplate.

How about just a piece of tubing you can hang in the last clamps that has the lights on the end and a numberplate in teh middle. Light assemblies  and numberplate holders can be bought at Midas. Or if you make it light enough you can strap it to the frame with bungee cords. Maybe use a piece of PVC pipe then.

It's a problem with most bike racks, but the onus is on the driver to ensure their numberplate is not obscured. Why should a manufacturer keep producing a solution if people don't have the common sense to buy it.

It's easy enough to come up a home solution with for the numberplate.

BigH maybe try Eagle Canyon Cycles- Tony Harding 011 795 4022

Thule and holdfast make numberplate and light assemblies, but not having seen your rack I can't say how to attach them. I'm pretty sure that a plan could be made with zip ties or bungee cords or a bolt or two...

I have the three bike one shown here. It has a little plate with four holes in it at the top end tip.

Yeah, it pisses me off when people put things on the back of their car and become blase and hardegat when they don't check their numberplate and try and lay the blame at the shop/manufacturer.

Although how many folk whinge to the car, trailer or towbar suppliers and manufacturers when they get a fine for the same thing.

My first bike carrier was a BikeCaddy. It was one clamped onto the

spare wheel of my Landy. When I asked if it would not break the

holder, I was assured "No".

Six months later, the holder broke - the carrier had stressed the metal

so badly the holder ripped and my spare wheel started falling off.

A R300 carrier caused R700 damage.

I then sucked it in, bought a Thule and am very happy. It even has

lights and a number plate holder, so it's 100% legal. And it's never

broken my car in 5 years...

Holdfast have a rep in JHB area, but their branch is in CT. Will PM details. Attachment shouldn't be a problem, it seems there's something to attach to. If it gets in the way of getting the bikes on and off then just velcro the board to the top tube...

jmaccelari, which Thule did you get?

Also bought one, the 'Ride On' I think, goes onto the spare wheel, other than some hassle with the importers I've been extremly happy with the product as well.

The Euroway 3 bike carrier. Very happy, but have never dealt with the

agents. Got it at a good price from Linden... It was a cr@p lot of money

then, so I'd hate to know how much they cost now...

Know the one you're talking about, goes on the towbar. They are expensive, when the ex and I bought ours I bitched about the price, ranted and raved, have to admit I saw the light after using it. When we split I made damn sure I held onto it Big%20smile
