I propose we put our collective wisdom together and put forward some ideas on educating road users (all of them) on the importance of road safety and the need to obey the rules.

With the whole lycra vs steel debate, we actually found some common gripes and I believe that we can do something to improve road safety for all of us.

What would be a good (the best) forum? (TV, motoring mags, bike mags, cycling mags)

Who has contacts in these areas that can get exposure to highlight just how many people don't obey the rules or don't care about the rules?

This is an issue that affects all of us. Some more than others, but it does affect all of us.

The "Arive Alive" campain is only highly visible at Easter and December. We need the police to do their work and do it properly, all the time and we need to makesure that as many road users as possible understand the rules.

Please, lets not use this topic to vent frustation and anger. Let's use it for ideas.

Any takers?

S2L - this is EXACTLY what TB is all about... go to www.thinkbike.co.za

everyone keeps running off on their own tangent instead of working together to achieve something and then complains because nothing happens. work together and maybe something can be achieved.

ThinkBike has been great in helping me with a cycling awareness campaign that I'm trying to put together at work. We just need to tailor the messages to suit cyclists more.

I think a good start is to get 35000.00 "think bike" stickers in each and every ones goody bag for the Argus and every other big race. So that's hopefully +/-30 000.00 cars that could potentially have that warning on. Early morning radio stations can also hammer the message home. If you can get guys like Gareth Cliff who was/is pretty anti cycling on board . In peak hour traffic on all the stations. If it gets to one dude who has a tendency to road rage on cyclists... there's already one of us less killed.

I dont think that we need "think bike" stickers rather a cycle safe sticker. There are some significant diferences between motor bike and cycling safety issues and a different campagn is important.

But great idea. I am sure PPA could put one of their cyclesafe stickers into each goody bag.

I think a few good options would be to have a regular drivetime spot on talk radio during the morning and evening peaks. Also the newspapers could sponsor a page on cycling and motoring education / awareness. The Argus as the sponsor for the funride world champs would definatly get on board. Are there any jurnos who could chat to someone at the argus. I am happy to write to the editor, but someone on the inside may help

Thanks guys.

Slowpoke, in our country of 40 some odd million, TB, this forum, the motoring forum etc, only have so many members. I'd like to think that we are mostly, the converted.

There are still a lot of road users (motor, cycle and pedestrians) who don't know - possbly don't care.

I'm thinking a drive to reach more is what we need.

FF, TB addresses cycling safety too. there are dual branded TB stickers. TB has also already done one run of cycling shirts and are looking at another run if there is interest. TB marshals cycling races AND cycling training rides to increase the safety of hte cyclists and to try enforce the concept that cyclists have the right to be there and use the road for these purposes. that is also why TB marshals allow racing when safe but try to get the riders back to the left when it's not safe (safety awareness) etc etc etc. as i said - WHY INSIST ON TRYING TO HAVE DISJOINTED DISCOORDINATED DILUTED EFFORTS??? TB has a media team in place. etc etc etc

TITTS (Take It To The Schools) adresses road safety by educating kids about increasing general awareness of other 2 WHEELED (iw not just motorised) road users AND the importance of ensuring your own safety on 2 WHEELS (ie again not just motorised).

All TB efforts do include cyclists as much as we can but we need more cyclists to get involved

*rant on*

is it really that tough to "lower" your standards and join forces with people who don't care WHAT 2 wheeler you ride? are you that elite that bikers aren't good enough for you?

*rant off*

S2L - that is the point - TB have a media team and they do their best to drive more awareness to the general public. but we only have so many peeps - get involved and join forces and take it to the next step - the people in TB are willing. just look at NixTCR's comment - TB are getting involved and helping with her thing.

Nix' date=' what is the campaign you are working on ? Got any more details ?

I'm trying to bring cycling awareness home to the people I work with. Colin used to work for us as did Teddy grace who was killed 18months ago, so I fugured lets start at home, start small. Remind the people closest to us that there are alot of people they work with who cycle so please be careful on the road. I wanted to go hard core messages, and using the Thinkbike posters tied in well with that. but i have had to tone it down a bit. I'll be puttin posters around our building and info on our intraweb to get as much exposure as i can. If I reach 500 of my colleagues, and they tell their friends and family, we'll have reached more people than by jsut complaining here.

I'm hoping that I'll be able to get this done in the next couple of days, but red tape is making it a little challenging. But i'm derterminded!!

I think one of our best chances of succes...If DJ's mention/ promote bike safety between say 7-9 in the mornings when most people travel to work It could make a diffirence.

SP. I like the idea of taking it to the schools. I recall going to some traffic centre in Primary school and riding a bike around a track that had traffic lights and all that stuff.

I, don't think they do that sort of thing any more.

It also occurs to me that drivers convicted of drivng offenses (Speeding and traffic light jumping) should be sentenced to community service rather than being fined. The community service should take the form of being forced to work in the casualty wards of hospitals on Friday and Saturday nights so they can witness more of what happens to human bodies in hgh speed collisions.
