idrive Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Having a bike on a roof rack is also the most UNECONOMICAL way of carrying a bike. But why d'ya go to Cajees?
Daxiet Posted February 23, 2009 Author Posted February 23, 2009 Was in need of a couple spares for the race, which would have worked out to ~50-70 bucks. They were the closest en-route. But that said, they helped me out more than any other bike shop would have, so no dissing Cajees. It may be the most uneconomical, however the most practical should you want to gain access to your boot. That said I drive a diesel and the fractional increase in consumption is worth it. From Dullstroom to the Westrand, making a drop-off in Centurion and then at JHB Int. I avg. 6.3L/100kms. 1 bike on the roof, 2 in the a trailer (in bike cases), a fully laiden boot and 4 adults. At worst I would say the bike attributed for 0.1L/100kms.
Dirtbreath Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Having a bike on a roof rack is also the most UNECONOMICAL way of carrying a bike. The only economical way of transporting a bike is inside. You would be very surprised at how uneconomical a tow bar mounted carrier is.
brianj Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I slide back the sunroof cover (glass roof) when the bikes are on, so I remember not to go into the garage. So far so good, but would also like a better solution.

Santa C Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Roofracks' date=' not for me, I am bound to have a mishap like this. You can do a search and see how many people already slipped up with roof racks. Hope all is okay now and enjoy the race![/quote'] Happened to so many people...surley people should have learned never by roof racks...It's not worth the pain later.
Yang Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 To the bottom of your lift up garage door, attach a tennis ball on a cord that will bounce off your windscreen, everytime that you go and park. This is especially after you arrive at home, exhausted after a race or a training ride, and all you wanna do is hurry into the house to crash on the couch, and you forget about your bike. Also tie a tennis ball to your car port. It would be interesting to know from Cajees how much business they have had from guys with bikes on their roof racks ..................................................................
CScriba Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Maby cajees intentionally organised that bar to be solid > increased income haha
Tumbleweed Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 roof rack carriers are for posers... when i owned an old beetle, i had to use one. and i had the same misfortune when i took my bmx to work the one day so i could ride the troyeville bowl on my way home. the collision with the entrance to the parking garage ripped the bike and rack right off the car. no major damage though!
Tumbleweed Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Troyeville bowl or Troyeville Hotel??!! they are kinda in the same vicinity... bowl first, then the hotel
