Expensive Hardtail or Cheap Dual Suspension

Very interesting! I thought a FS climb better. How come all the pros use FS then? Is it because they have the best of the best FS?

So basically what you're saying is' date=' get a HT unless you can afford a R50k FS (if you're planning on racing)?[/quote']

A. FS are known to descend better, even with lock out they don't climb as well as HT's.

B. Most pro's ride HT's unless they deem the course requires that which an FS can bring to the table (Watch a couple 1 day races and you will struggle to find a podium taken by an FS). In the ladies races Tania Raats seems to only use a FS.

not a full hijack, is Burry gonna ride a HT at all this year? I know he mostly rode the GT HT with a FS now and then only when the race warranted it.

but it seems to be a little different when you have a FS spesh epic at ~8kg in your arsenal

He has an awesome bike that rivals HT's, good advertising for Specialized. He  avoided his GT soft tail for most of last year, but can't get enough of his FS Specialized.

The comfort of an FS is amazing and in the long run will reduce fatigue enduced by bouncing around on an HT. When I climb I lock out my rear shock, but as soon as possible flick into 60% travel on the rear. Bottom line I have become spoilt.

A certain XC pro from Burry's neck of the woods told as that his contract stipulates that he must race the FS bike in ALL races. HT not allowed.

Sounds very crafty, good marketing team they have if this is the case. It doesn't seem to be impacting his racing if you look at his XC National results. He now even has time to change shoes a couple times LOL

I would love to see a poll on this...

Like mabe a tickbox at the boshendal race this weekend (on the indemnity form or whatever, not the point)

Of what bike you ride, FS/HT and how much spent..

I wont be surprised If there are more FS bikes in the 1st third of the field then HT's, and they wont all be 50k...

My FS is a 12.7kg beast.. and I also look at some carbon HT's with lustfull eyes.. untill I get on the trail..then Im so glad I have a FS.

I think FS is the way of the Future.. from 2 hours onwards on a bike, FS just makes sence...

To me, it all depends on how you ride and how you want to ride. I ride a HT because I'm not that good yet, and HT's are less forgiving. So when I've learned to ride a HT smoothly, I'll get a FS, so it can help my riding instead of covering my mistakes. (It's the same reason I ride with flatties and sneakers instead of clips)

Droo Im going to let the first part go by.. but the sneakers instead of clips one.. no-no.. I cant let it go by.. LOLLOLIn my eyes, clips would help you commit to sections rather than being ready to put-foot.

If you shop around you'll still be able to get some good deals...

Always Cannondale Scalpal frames on eBay for $500 and up...

Some nice Kona's and other duals for $400 to $800...

Someone here on the hub just bought a 2008 XT disk groupset for around R6000 duties etc. incl from Comobike...

For R5000 you can buy a 1350g disk wheelset on eBay...

Shop around and keep shopping... bargains keep coming up every day...

Thinking of my FS bike...

Frame cost me R6000 from a hubber

Got a great deal for full X9 drivetrain, Xpedo pedals, Crossmark Tires, Juicy 7's, American Classic wheels (local bike shop)

Brand new Sid Race 1269g R3800 (eBay)

740g Crank R1000 (sold new stylo in kit for R1000)

KCNC controls R2000

Selle Slr 135 saddle R750 (new at bike shop)

Eish... ok... almost R24 000 but 10.6kg for a dual... where can you buy a new dual of that weight for that price?

Buying parts individually always cost more in the past, but with the new prices it's different...

If I were to upgrade any bike now, I would buy Penford Cycles X9 kit, then all you need later is a HT or FS frame and a decent fork and you'll have a top notch light bike...

The Penford X9 kit comes with everything but a frame and fork... (American classic disk wheels, Juicy 7 brakes, Xpedo pedals, Crossmark Lust tyres, Stylo Crank, X9 ders/triggers/980cassette/951chain, jagwire cable kit, truvativ XRstem/riser bar/seatpost, velo saddle, velo grips. R11 700 these days...

Just shop around... still many bargains to be found... some new condition second hand bikes around... good luck...

I was a *cough* roadie for many years, and rode MTB with clips for about 6 months. I can clip out as quickly as I can take my feet off flatties, so it's not a commitment issue. It's more about being able to lift and control the back without yanking up on clips.

(but it can help avoid being scorpioned when flying OTB...)

FS saves your body and depending on your age, it would be a great bonus, best cheap FS, giant ....be prepared to spend at least 14k otherwise...HT
