So you would say this is a good deal then?

Yup! Have time Time Attac Carbon's myself (weight saving), did the Clarens race last year, mud was like porridge, pedals held through brilliantly even with feet caked in mud.

I also find the clipping and unclipping from these pedals FAR easier than eggbeaters which I rode for a good 2 years as well. They have never popped out accidentally either and make a nice snapping sound when you engage :)

I also rode that Clarens. I still get tears in my eyes when I think about it. Was my first marathon.

I still had SPD's then. That did NOT work out well for me.

The Egg Beaters don't clip in as easily as the spd's. I sometimes have to search for them a little (maybe I'm just daft). They do clip out easily tough, shed mud very well and have plenty float (biggest plus for me) and have never unclipped by accident.

I did my first MTB race the past weekend after being a roadie for years. The biggest problems that I encountered was that I struggled to clip my shoes after the mud started packing up.

From a roadie background, i like my pedals to hold my shoes, not feel all wishy washy under my foot. I tried a set of Candy's, never liked em, you can't tention the things so they always felt loose. The 4 entry system, i couldn't tell if i should move my foot fwd or backwards to clip in. Ridden Shimano 505's, 520 & XT, i'll stick with Shimano thanks. To clear mud, tap shoe on side of pedal, clip in, think it's something you do with all mtb pedals. I've only been MTB for 2 years now. Also if people keep bringing up contact area between pedal and shoe, increasing it model to model, why would you want your contact area to be 2 pieces of wire?

I loved mine until they decided to colapse during a race after hitting a rock. Now i stick to Shimano xt.

+100, had a m8 donate a bike, he had eggbeaters on there, also 1 moer big dent in the 1 side, couldn't use 2 of the 4 sides, you replace the pedal. I've hit some serious rocks with Shimano, clips in perfectly still.

everybody always mentions how easy pedals shed mud but I don't think the problem is with the pedals but the cleats. All cleats look basically the same so all of them will clog up and you will struggle to get your foot it. Unless you actually drag your pedals through the mud, they should never get into contact with it and will always unclip easy. And nobody will ever convince me about the 4 sided entry system so I won't mention it.

+100

Also saw a guy at the Knysna RE:CM200, Candy pedal in hand, axle on the bike, not sure what went wrong but that really wouldn't excite me!

I have been riding candys for a few years now.

- I also prefer the solid feel of my Look road bike pedals compared to the loose float of the Crank Brothers

- I have had the spring in the pedal break leaving me with no pedal since all 4 engagement sides rely on the same spring

Based on this I am moving over to SPD soon.

Try and stretch to the XS if you can.

The mechanism is the same though, and I swear there is no better mechanism. Even the eggbeater uses the same idea ("floating" horizontal bars), just not as well.

Was looking at them as well. At R999 at CWC they are not badly priced either.
