Johan' date=' how many k's a month/year do you ride. I talk from the experiance of plenty k's a month and a good understanding of mechanics and engineering, I own two engineering businesses which gives me access to substantial R&D facilities ie. oil companies lab's, engineers etc. [/quote'] JB is one of those okes that talks thru his arse just to confuse us. He nevers rides and knows fokol about bicycle mechanics.

edit: Oops, I forgot the obligatory Wink

Irony seems too sophisticated for a certain late-nite, anonymous sniper, I'd say.

Rogers, no matter what figure I quote, it'll never be enough for certain people. Besides, what does that have to do with anything?

You don't get mechanical experience from riding lots. You do get more examples of issues than someone that doesn't ride lots but that doesn't mean you understand how or why they happened.

Tenure in this game means nothing. You need to actively explore, analyse and debate the issues. Two, or even ten engineering businesses also doesn't tell me much. My aunt Mabel owned an engineering company when uncle Donald died and she knew squat.

I know a guy who's been pouring concrete into prestress structures and steel-reinforced concrete for 47 years, he still doesn't know how these structures work.

If you have done any R&D share it. If you've studied tribology and applied that to bicycles share it, don't allude to it.

There are plenty of engineers on this forum and many of them will tell you that they learn new things about bicycles all the time, just like I do and you too will if you hang around the tech forum. It's an interesting, if somewhat hostile place.

If you are still curious about me, everything I've written, debated, asked, learnt and retracted is right here for everyone to see. Use Advanced Search.

I look forward to having you around when those interesting debates pop up. Forget about the lube barnies, they happen every 3 months, as do the carbon vs aluminium story, tubbies vs clinchers and how to make disc brakes behave better.  Better stuff will crop up.

Two engineering shops and you wanna dump a chain cause it got surface rust ? Take the advice to just lube it and ride it ! If the look of the chain is spoiling your day use the steel brush . and WTF does the fact that you do not ride a bike like a pro got to do with you knowledge on how they actaully work ? Either you disagree with the advice given and give your expert opinion or keep ur trap shut ! This is a discussion forum not a mudslinging contest .

Mmm maybe my wit is a bit on the blunt side tonite as I seem to have ellicited the response from the wrong person this time. JB, I was taking the mickey out of the claims of "2 businesses", "lots of k's" ...

It's not my back yard, I know plenty pubs in Germiston though. I'm staying in KBay, phone me on 0823086847 if you want to meet up for a beer.

Maaan this is an interersting place, a question was asked,I offered some advice and then got slated for my gramatical correctness. From then on things really went downhill. I've come to the conclusion guys on this forum don't have enough to do!(opened myself up for more abuse?).

A point of interest, I still ride regularly with the guy who JB bought his original "yellow saddle" from !!!.

I've heard lots of stories about JB LOL

Must admit this is entertaining though.

I would spray it with something light like Q20 and just wipe it down.

What I do with abused chains that have a bit of life left in them. Clean them really well. Brush and shake in the bottle. Dry properly. Have a hook that i hang it up from and drrop oil from the top and just leave it until it drips off the bottom. All this while giving my bike a scrub including sprockets and chain ring.

Gotta say just love the tension here!Hug

JB, have a beer for me. Guinness!

...and all i wanted to know was about my chain.

It went from chain to Engineering businesses to aunt maybel to beers at kalk bay.

Very strange place this!

It's quite an achievement to have a thread go so far off topic... even more so seeing as beer was mentioned smiley36.gif smiley36.gif

Buy a new chain' date=' that ones farked, all you are going to do is trash your chain rings and casette[/quote']

Having done the sani, I'll second that!

Rather replace the chain now, than the complete drive train later.

Replace, did acid cleaning. Did not work, question is how long in acid, do you use brush to clean it.......

Don't worry get new one, its like loosing data on PC with no backup done.... it only happens once. Next time you'll clean the chain quicker after your race/training ride

Same thing here, I had some rust on my brand new chain after cleaning but not properly lubing following Sani. Inspection told me its cosmetic and prmarily on the outside of the chain only. No problems with stickyness in the chain. I Q20ied and dried it, lubricated, rode and lubricated again. I'll risk it
