Question re: duties on items from CRC

Hi Everyone

I am currently looking at getting some stuff from Chain Reaction (Crankset / Sidi shoes and a couple of other odds and ends)

I know many of you have used them in the past - what sort of duty will customs hit me this side for items imported? ie: do you save all that much when you buy it from them and add the shipping costs + VAT and local import duties??

Does the duty amount vary depending on the type of goods ie: i have heard that clothing has a hefty import duty (obviously to protect local industry)

Is this trues?

Thanks

Rick

there should not be import duties on bicycle spares - they fall under import tariff heading 8712.90 and are duty free. You will need to pay VAT on the value at the exchage on the day. The shoes are more difficult as it depends on the composition of the shoe - but you can expect to pay up to 30% duty on them

Bicycle parts = no duties. You only pay the VAT when it arrives. On Shoes there are duties, but I don't know how much. I had 4 DVD's in my CRC order, and they came through unnoticed.

Get the shoes only if you are sure you will still save on the local price by adding 30%. Bike components = no duties. Dont think dvd's get charged either. Just pay vat on this side.

I recently brought in a seat post from the UK. (not CRC).

I wasn't even charged 14% vat when it arrived here, only a

'clearence fee' of R25.00

Bonus!

get more peeps to but stuff with you, If you clear R3800 (I think) you dont pay for shipping, otherwise Its hardly worth it unless the Items are on special.

Watch out for shoes. I bought my Ex girlfriend some shoes there, They charged me al the 30% vat etc and then the shoes were a size 3 in stead of size 6 so I had to send it back which would have cost me about the same as n new pair of shoes would have cost me in the beginning, before they exchange it. So I cut my losses and now use the size 3 shoes as keyrings or throwing at people/things... Expensive lesson.

Dont buy clothes.. from CRC..also weird fits etc...

Duty calculation are based on

value x percentage (30% etc)

Vat calculations are based on

value + 10% + any duties if applicable = ? x 14%

Does one pay 30% import duties plus the VAT of 14%

From my experience, with other goods that I have imported, if there is an import duty of 30%, then what customs does is they take the rand value and then add 30% to total cost and charge VAT on the total amount.

For example total goods R1000 plus 30% = aprox R1300 and then Vat. So Total to pay on collection of goods is R1482.00

If you are vat registered, i.e. business, then you can claim the Vat amount back, otherwise its a case of "Hoes en Betaal"

This is also 100% true, but occasionally the 10% surcharge is sometimes dropped. I think this is a courier company fee that gets charged, but is not always the case.

As you can see from some previous posts sometimes you get away with duies completely. Depends on customs official checking your parcel and also on the value of goods. But it is good idea to keep that extra 10% surcharge in the back of your mind - just in case (LOL).

These are the correct formulas for SARS , its got nothing to do with a courier fee. I work a customs clearing agent

Hi Everyone

Thanks for the feedback - so it looks like bike components can be very good value - particularly if a bulk order over R3800 for free shipping, but shoes / clothes will have duty added.

The Sidi's I am looking at are 2008 Sidi Dominator 5's which are on special for R1512.00.

I have a pair of these which I bought @ beginning of last year for R2098 (I love them, if you have big feet they are the best cycling shoes ever. I have used Shimano & Diadora and tried Adidas & Specialized(neither make big enough) but Sidi is awesome IMHO. I spoke to the Sidi guys at the Expo last week and he said that the current retail on them is around R2800.

So price from CRC with duty and VAT and shipping would add up to around R2.5K so it wouldn't really be much of a saving - unless I ordered a whole bunch of stuff and got the free shipping.

Although - I could order them, have them shipped to my brother in the UK and have him bring them with in his suitcase when he comes over in August Big%20smile

Use your brother. I paid 1k in duties etc. to bring my Sidi's in from Comobike. Considering it was the time between the Old Sidi agent and the new one starting, I paid it. Still it's the new 2009 shoe and in a big size that I battled to find anywhere. I've seen quite a few Lbs that have re priced their old Sidi shoes to reflect prices of between R2350 and

R 4500. Crazy! If you can get your 2008 shoe for that price, and he carries it in his luggage for you, you've got a major bargain!

Hi Caad4

I will speak to my brother. I just need to get his address to ship them to. As mentioned the Sidi guys at Argus expo told me that the current retail price for the Dominator 5 is R2800. Besides the price there is always the issue of stock. I can never find my size in stock (49 Wide) - and always have to ask the bike store to order them (only takes a couple of days usually) but it's still a pain. the Sidi guys at the Expo said something about the Sole Replacement System MTB Sidi's being over R4000 - SCARY.
