Can you shorten Spokes / rethread them? I don?t want to buy a new batch of spokes so if I can have them made shorter it?ll save me some bucks, any one know? I think I once heard some one say Cycle Factory had a machine that can do it, but I might have been dreaming it?

I've got the DT Swiss Revolutions, I think about 4-5mm need to come off..Embarrassed

M - I saw it being done here once at Summit cycles so I guess it can be but  a bit of a time consuming matter for lots of spokes ......

I see...I just read you'd need a spoke cutter and thread roller to do the job, wonder how much it'll cost and what shop will have it in WC..

The Rim Diameter is different to the one I was going to have them build in. The ERD for new rim is 538mm and the spokes was ordered for a Rim with a ERD of 548mm

You can shorten Revolutions as long as you don't exceed the available butted piece.

The problem is twofold:

This is labour intensive and although I have such a machine, there's no way I'll charge you less than the cost of a new spoke to do the job. It is just too much of a schlepp, unless you're doing it for yourself or for love.

Secondly, it is not a good idea to re-use spokes that have been disturbed in the hub. We regularly do rim transplants, but then without disturbing the spokes or removing them from the hub.

The spokes in your wheel have taken on two different sets. The outbound ones have taken on a sharper angle than the inbound ones who exit at almost 90 degrees. Even if you take careful note of inbound and outbound ones, you'll still not have success and spokes will start to break soon.

Thus, even if you are prepared to pay me/anyone else R20 to cut and roll a new thread, it won't be worth it since the spokes will be ruined.

Cutting and threading is only an option on new spokes. If you have a box full of a certain spoke length and you need one or two just 4mm shorter, that's when you bring out the Hozan*.

*Hozan is a lekker Jap company making really good, obscure bike tools. Pronounced with great anger, Hozan is the symbol of 100kg cast iron wheel stands and lots of other small things I've forgotten...has anyone seen where I left my Ginko Biloba?

Sorry, I just read this again and it appears you are talking about new spokes. Same cost issues still apply. However, Coolheat in Jhb has a nice automatic spoke cutter and threader, if you know someone there you could bully/bribe/feed beer....

Correction, the cutter they have is not automatic, it is still manual, but very effective and not half as much a pain as using the Hozan.

Do you think they;ll be upto doing 66 spokes for me?? sounds like they might not like doing so many...maybe I should just buy new ones.
