I am wanting to buy spokes to build up my 29er wheels, my local bike shop says i need to buy a 100 at a time and only need 64, so i am going to try and source them from another bike shop.

What lenght spokes will i need to build Shimano XTR hubs into a Stans ZTR 29er rims?

You don't have enough information here to calculate spoke length.

I need the number of crossings (3X is suggested), whether the wheel is V-Brake or disc and, which ZTR rim you're using.  The Flow, Arch, 355 and Olympic all require different spoke lengths.

I'll sell you spokes in any quantity except half numbers.

BigBen, as I understand it Disk Wheels need the spokes to be Dished, to compensate for the stresses imparted by braking at the hub rather than at the rim. There is a different lacing pattern that results in diferent paths from rim to hub.

Thanks Foe! Didn't consider the forces being at a different place on the wheel Confused

Foe is right. The left side of a front disc brake wheel has a shorter spoke than the right. On the rear, they are almost similar, but with a rim-brake wheel the left spokes on the rear wheel are much longer.

Also, the two different rims have a different depth and requires a different length of spoke.

It is not a stupid question and something that's not so obvious. I admit with a great deal of blushing that I once (when I just started cycling) went into my bike shop and ask the owner for a few spare spokes for my bike.

"What type of bike?" he asked.

"A mountain bike" I said. "A grey one."

"That's still not enough information," he said.

"Just give me some spokes," I said.

He sold me a few spokes. Luckily I never had to use them because sure as hell they wouldn't fit.

Thanks.  It is a Stans ZTR Arch 355 29er rim, 32 holes and it has a XTR disc brake.  I have been advised to get the DT Swiss Competition spokes but that is gonna cost me over R3000 and will have plenty of extra spokes as they come in a box of 75.  Won't a double butted spoke work out best in cost and performance?  Also not sure what you mean by "crossing" but as you are the expert i will go with your advise.

Now there's too much information. There is no ZTR Arch 355 listed. It is either an Arch or a 355, not both.

OK, here are your lengths.

Left Front    292

Right Front  294

Left Rear     293

Right Rear   292

It's a nasty combo, with only two common sizes, no matter how I jiggle things. This will only work on at 3X wheel with one of Arch rim on XTR 965 disc hubs.

DT Swiss Competition (double butted) spokes aren't expensive. PM me for details. Those lengths are also available in Sapim and a variety of varieties - black, flat, expensive, rond, expensive, cheap etc etc.
