As far as medals go; read this somewhere and thought it was a grand idea, apologies if it has been posted before!

When entering online there should be an option to donate the medal cost to the charity associated with the event, or if you want the medal, opt to receive the medal. This way the guys who end up tossing the medal away can contribute to a good cause instead.

The only logistical thing will be giving the medals to the guys after the event who want them and not to everyone but this could be done at reg or collection point after the finish with a simple tick list.

Also, no pre-entry no medal, just another little penalty for the late comers.

The organizers can also then cut down on cost/sponsorship and use it elsewhere, like goodie bags with useful things like valve adapters or tyre levers?!?

I am sure the medal cost donation option and a space to donate a little more would be an easy addition to the online process, same as ride subs. And would be used by many, myself included.

Option for a medal or not?.sounds like a good idea, logistically it won?t be a big deal?on the entry form you can have a tick box ?.and during the race maybe have a sticker or something on the race number?so when riders finish, those who want the medals can be picked out easily. (Medals have to be handed out at the finish, handing them out before the race starts defies the point a bit)<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

<?: prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Tyre levers in the goodie bag?good idea!

Except that organisers have to have the medals ordered and made long before this, so if you choose to not get one, it doesn't matter, the cost of making it has already been incurred...

That is why the medals should only be available for pre-entries. This should hopefully give enough time to estimate medal numbers and have them made. Line entries get fee penalty and no medal option, just another incentive to enter online, making everyones life easier.

Also, don't forget the economy of scale. The fewer medals they have to produce, the higher the unit price

Yeh?that is why it?s called pre-enter. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

If you want to be economical?one can always order in bulk...and just change the ribbon to incorporate the date every year?

The line entries are the last people you want to tell that they wont get a medal. There'd be a fockin riot...

Maybe its a good poll topic then: Choose to take medal or donate proceeds to charity to get a broader feel?

Of-course there are always economy of scale problems, but one of my mantras is 'no problems only solutions' so i hope the economy of scale falls in favor of a charity instead of something unwanted/needed in my dustbin. I understand that some people may want the medal and they are more than entitled to it, the option would be nice to try and shift funds to where they might be better spent and i hope the medal guys and organizers can make this happen. Maybe my idea glass just seems half full..........

You could always have a few extra medals for the line entry guys say 100 or so on a first come first serve basis. Chances are they wont be taken by the first couple hundred finishers anyway. But even that should still reduce costs for the organizer who hopefully has the scruples to use the savings wisely. Use it don't use it. Its your choice should you happen to be a race organizer.

what about three options.

a: entry with medal

b: entry without medal (money goes to charity)

c: entry without medal or charity
