I'm not planning on buying power meter and started interval training last week. Doing the Ride mag 8 sets of 4min and 90sec rest.

At this moment I'm focusing on gear selection (middle front and 4th back)and cadence (above 110) and couldn't care about HR - as I push it to 92% for last 3 sets.

But in 2 weeks time I want to start with power intervals. Can anyone recommend how I approach this?

Wondering if somewhere I can find gear + cadence = power output graph

Sorry if this question has been asked - which I'm sure it did - but can't find quick link to it. If any one can point me to it please do so?

The best thing that you can do is ride as hard as you can maintain for  1 hour 3 times a week.

.....says the man with the arsenal of powermeters!!!LOL

mmm Embarrassed The sad news is that I last looked at a power plot about 12 months ago & my PT hub battery is flat!

Probably a good thing because they don't lie!  i think mine's battery is also going.  I went out hard yesterday and the figures it showed was lower than normal.  Must be the battery......Embarrassed

I have a yellow thingy now and I will be honest I still pay clse attention to my heart rate when I ride. In saying that thou knowing what Watts I am pushing out I can climb more steadily now trying to push out a steady wattage. I have also got a new personal best up to the cable car from Kloof road since I can do the steady wattage.

...but it did help you to get a PB on a TT?  Told you it's like cheating.Wink

Remeber colonel, it doesn't make you train harder, it helps you measure where you are and ride in the zone!

Enjoy (even if you're not sold on it yet)

Gear + Cadence will give you speed - all you need is a speedometer Wink,

impossible to work out power without a powermeter - due to different road surfaces, wind, gradient etc etc

I am also shocked. colonel you will be.

I stopped bothering with HR after about 6 months with the PT but I do actually think that there is an "efficiency" aspect still to be studied - that is generating the most power for the least energy expenditure. more watts for less heart rate

LOL Yeeeesssss!!! But I mean more than that. For example try 1 hour at threshold power - 5% at 120 cadence

Then try 1 hour at a threshold - 5% at your most comfortable cadence.

For a start I doubt that you'll finish the 120 cad but plot the HR graphs for both and you will see what I mean. Most power guru's will say ignore HR & ignore cadence butI believe that there is some research to be done to improve training with HR & power together.

I did an interesting experiment yesterday.  Did my normal 3x15min intervals and focussed on getting a smooth pedal stroke.  You know: push-sweep-pull, rather than my usual stomping and it made a HUGE difference!  Couldn't believe the power stats and I got about 10% higher figures at the same heart rate and perceived effort.  That's where I love the powertap.
