I am looking to plunge into the single speed arena on either my 26' or 29'. what is a good starting point for either / both tire sizes? or any links to gear charts etc. i have single speed chainrings in 32 and 34. What chain would you guys recommend, or will any chain work fine? Any ideas?

Thanks

The guy that won the 24 hour SS world champs (and the guy that came 2nd), used a 32-20 gearing on 29'ers. With normal wheels I think the 2-1 ratio is normally used, so a 32-16.

I run 32 x 18t did use a 16t previoulsy, but the 18t feels much better.......on 26" wheels.

if you're strong like buckshot you'll use a 16t on 29" and do a 24h race. Clap

A 32/16 was good enough for me to set a new personal best at Delta Park last night on my steel niner. That's including previous efforts on a geared bike!

It's also a nice gear for cruising the spruit on.

When I did the Crater Cruise, I increased my gear to a 42/16, which was perfect for that course.

Seeing as the gears aren't that expensive, why not buy a 16 and an 18 and alternate between the two?

Thanks for the reply's. I definately plan to do 24hr races on it and the odd marathon. looks like the 34 was a waste of cash then ?!? Do you guys have any cool links to SS pages and crazy racers like dj birch etc. Im an addict what can i say. It may only have one gear but three speeds, sitting standing and walking! smiley36.gif

I use 32 - 15 when Im just riding around. This past weekend I ran a 32 - 16 ratio on a very technial xc race. It were awesome. There were some points were I had to stand and power more than I would have liked, but overall I had no problems keeping up with the conventional geared bikes.

Muddee is that a 26' or wagon wheel 29'??

And chains: 8,9 speed? do power links work OK or rather not risk it? Just makes sense when trying to find that perfect gear for that magic carpet ride!

Thanks again guys!
