Lube or Motor oil?

OK, this has now officially gone down the tubes.

Where's that guy with the engineering shop(s) and access to a tribology lab? Maybe he can talk to us about the presence of engine metals in the oil and its effects on the longevity of the average surburban bicycle drive-chain?

I heard a great idea while at Sani. Some of the chaps in the UK use Chain-saw lube/oil on their MTB chains in the wet, and it app. works really well...

but some say it might be a tad too thick. Mix it 50/50 with motor oil and it is perfect.

It is not a good idea at all. It is so sticky....like toffee, that it throws up strings of oil like snot stuck to a spinning spoke. It gets oil on the brakes, on your legs, everywhere.

Lefty' date=' with respect, this is crazy. Who wants to handle old oil? I also doubt that the newspaper will filter the oil in under ten days. By then the dog has pushed over the bucket and.......

Why do these oil threads always go downhill?

Yes it's crazy I know. and used lube oil should not be handled without gloves. it contains not only wear metals but also burnt fuel particles so no don't play with the stuff, please.

the newspaper we have here in cape town seems quite porous and lube oil does soak through. Ok my car uses a 5W 30 so the stuffs not so viscous and flows easily even after 15,000km. if you';re using 20W 50 then agreed, it's not such a lekker idea.

Fact is that any engine oil will do.  Chain saw lube works in the UK because its so wet over there they don;t have a dust problem. the sticky oil stays on the chain and the water just flushes the dirt off. I have tried this and it works in that climate.

No matter how good motor oil is, it still leaves your bike in a state of filth. The chain is black and untouchable, the cassette is hardly visible and no matter how hard you try, you will always have black teeth marks on your calves. There is always splatters of black oil on your chain stays.

You need to pray that your chain doesn't come off, your hands will look like a garage floor after trying to put it on.

Spend the R70 odd and get decent wax based lube. Your bike will look so much better for it.

I like that idea of the dip stick - man I should have thought of that.

Mmm - Maybe I will pick up some empty oil cans at the garage - and use those - I am sure there is allways a bit of clean oil left!

  • 3 weeks later...

What about using my sons favourite uncle cream, I mean vaseline? Its water proof.

Or how about cooking oil, tried it once at school when my chain rusted up and needed to get to school.
