I am very interested in this thread for a number of reasons.  Firstly' date=' there are a number of candidates to become members of the Rhema (material wealth and social influence is good) bible church.  Just because I don't earn R1mil a year does not mean I am jealous for (OF) the guy who does. Just because he/she is rich, overworked, stressed out and arrogant,(and someone) who needs material possessions to justify his short miserable existence, it does not mean that (it) will work for everyone.

Secondly, I tend to agreed (agree) with BigH (horror) that it is extravegant(extravagant) to spend such a lot on a mere bicycle.  I know it is not my place to tell the SUPER rich how to spend their money, but the point is, there are some not so rich that ( who) are making debt to buy bicycles that they cannot afford and don't need.  (they use the excuse "but is not like R120 000,  like that bike).

Thirdly, as a person with a bit of a social responsibility, I nthink (think) it is almost criminal that there are people that (who) are willing to justify spending R100 000 on a luxury item when there are people in RSA starving.  Go sit at design quarter (Cyclelab) on any afternoon and watch the Kueguls (Kugels) drinking coffee while their impoverished labourers battle their way home to dipsloot(Diepsloot) in the afternoon.  Then ponder about why there is so much crime and violence in RSA.  THe(The) bigger the class gap, hte(the) bigger the revolutionary potential.

lastly(Lastly), before you slam me with, "but we worked for it", ask yourself "was I ethical in my behaviour?"  or did I cheat a bit?  did I fix a price, do a deal?  Have I paid my tax?  The missing chapter in every success story, is where ethical behaviour was shelfed (shelved)for a while.  Sir Jeffery Archer even taped the pages together.  Mark Thatcher is silent on some import export work he did.  LA is the only cyclist that never doped.  Zuma owes nobody at the moment.

I have read a couple of views in this thread. Everybody can spend their money the way they see fit. The fact of the matter however is that let's say, golf clubs, are manufactured in China. You can buy a set of "Taylormade's" for R1000.00. This is a top of the range set. In sunny SA they sell for R21000.00. Where did the R20000.00 got added before it came to my door?!!

What I am trying to say is, whether you are stinking rich or piss poor, like I am, WE ARE BEING RIPPED OFF!!!

There are guys doing us a favor on this form, selling stuff at the right price, but we are to stupid to realize it! You buy a nicely painted frame with a well known brand on it and that same frame is available for 1/2 the price here on the hub. Only thing, it's not painted and branded. I have said my bit, flame me, burn me, throw rocks at me. Lock me up in a cell, I need to lose weight anyway... smiley24.gif

Not boasting, opinionated or self justifying. Just stating facts. I get a bit annoyed when " socially conscious" people try to prescribe to me what I should or should not do.By the way I do not believe I have to justify anything to anyone any more.

I tell you what, regardless of what the economy is doing, people are still buying expensive bikes. I cycled to the front of table mountain to watch the Epic prologue on Saturday and there were just bling bikes everywhere. Never seen the words S Works as much before!

Well said Jagwil. If you feel good about what you have achieved in life, and you want to enjoy now that life is getting on, do so. It's your privilege. You earned it, enjoy it! smiley1.gif

Don't get yourself worked up over Konafan.? He likes reaction.....

?

He knows just as well as everyone here that each person does what he wants.....

?

You want social uplifting?? Fire all the army guys and use the so called "defense"?money to give to the ?hungry.? We don't need guns and tanks....

at last, someone with a level head. (thank you Spidy) It is easy to overreact when someone says something you don't like or agree with. ?Yet it is important for someone to hold up a mirror and ask "do you like what you see?". ?If everyone agreed then life would be boring. ?Sometimes, in order to understand yourself you need to come into contact with people who disagree with you. ?Only then can you really know what you believe in. ?We live in a society that is too "agreeing".

If my postings offend you to such a point that you get angry, and want to go off on a childish rant and personal attacks, then ask yourself: ?" why am I offended? ?is it because this is a sensitive point for me?" ?By trying to attack me personally you are just showing weakness and a potential for growth.

I can go on and provide you with a lot of academic and theoritical discussions about projection, sublimation, mirror imaging, dialectic debating ext but you are all too busy for that.

Of course I agree 100% that the Defence Force should be closed down and the money spent more wisely, but there are too many corrupt politicians out there making money out of the arms trade and after all someone will have to keep you safe at night when the police admit they cannot stop the wave of organised crime in this country.

sleep well.

I see leave those guys who want a R95k MTB to their own.

What is important is that the rest of us not aspire tobe like them. Aspire to be yourself.

I am a pragmatic person but I like nice things. So I look forhte best deals possible which Ebay, CRC and shops in Hong kong, Malaysia etc.

I'm all for supporting the local cycling industry and as far as labour and often parts are concerned I will still buy locally as long as the price is right.

Thats me, I would not pay R95K for a bicycle, I'd rather spend it on a motorcycle like a BMW R80 or similar.

Each to their own. The only issue is aspiration. be yourself, its thebest gift you can give yourself and the world

I remember when I worked Saturday mornings at Linden Cycle back in the late 70s. Nobody touched a Raleigh because they were big and heavy with no panache. The Peugeot Sting was R99, then you moved way on up to the Peugeot Rapport at around R119.  Sitting in the window was the bike everyone wanted but couldn't afford: a Le Jeune at R500! Good Grief! So I suppose that, even back then, the top bikes were about 5 times the cost of an average bike, and the ratio is true today. Anyway, I still think my 80s Le Turbo is better than anything you've got. Sachs-Huret derailleurs live forever! Viva!

WELL SAID !!wpdeb.

My sentiments exactly.

It is MY money. I have worked BLOODY hard for it and I WILL spend it how I wish.

I actually don't give a rats ass what anyone else thinks about the BMW"s in my garage or the  expensive bikes I have in my storeroom.

Oh and by the way all the bikes and both cars and my home have been piad for in cash. And yes I am up to date with my taxes' date=' have never been involved in price fixing or cheating. I believe that I have ALWAYS been ethical and have never "cheated a bit."

So the bottom line is that I will spend MY money exactly how I please and if it pleases me to buy a new MARIN MOUNT VISION 5.9 for R 65000 I will do so and to hell with those who whine that they can't afford it . TOUGH sh*t. That is your problem not mine..

In the latest Buycycling they reviewed the new Trek Fuel EX 9.9........... it sells for R95 500!!!!!!

[cut]

...... still a blerrie lot of munny!!!!!!!!!

To me that's just totally unbelievable.... and more unbelievable that some people actually spend that much on a bike. But there are always those ridiculously wealthy that can justify that kind of expense.

So happy that the top of the range 24" Mountain Unicycle is only going to set me back R5000 Wink, and even if I upgraded to a carbon fibre seatpost, CF reinforced saddle, titanium hub and frame.... I'd still be paying under R15K... and what would I get for the extra R10K at the end of the day.... a few hundred gramms shaved off the weight.
