I have a pile of old parts lying around and seeing as everyone seems to be building Single Speed Bikes I decided to give it a try and see what all the hype is about. This is the bike I built:

Those of you with sharp eyes will have noticed that the bike is not 100% complete. I am missing the LH crank arm. For some reason I cant find it. Hence my post below:

Following are a few of the component highlights:

Frame: Trek 7000 19" (2000 model)

Fork: RST Omega SC (2001 model)

Handle Bar: Fox DH (700mm long for extra leverage)

Rear hub: Shimano XT (1995 Model, a testament to the durability of XT hubs)

Gear Ratio: 32-15, No tensioner needed.

Just need to find a LH crank and hit the trails.

No tensioner on the chain? How did you get the chain length right? Half-link chain?

aaah never mind, only saw your gear ratio now. Tongue

I have heard that a good ratio to start with is 2:1, ie: 32:16. I went for 32:15 because that allowed me to get away with no tensioner. I haven't actually tested this ratio yet though. Still battling to source a crank for my bike.

Blast from the past time. Shortly after completing this build I gave the bike away to my brother so only rode it a few times.

He gave it back to me a few months ago but it needed a bit of work and just stood in the garage. This morning I decided to replace a few components and this is the result:

I still need a brake cable for the back but went for a ride this afternoon anyway. I felt like a kid again on a simple bike.
