Best MTB to ride the Epic

I have secured an entry for the 2010 Epic. I've been looking to upgrade my Merida HT to a dual suspension anyway, and I figure this is as good a reason as any.

 

What are the views out there in terms of the best type of bike to ride the Epic with?

I have also just confirmed entry for next year. I have been riding matts pro hd tail for a while. Will be upgrading frame to full suss as well.

 

 

 

Looked at Giant anthem xo, as well as merida. Let me know your findings.

 

 

 

Will probably train on my merida hard tail for next few months to get over the initial costs of entering.

Use an Epic to ride the Epic

The MTB you have is the best. Don't use someone else's bike.

A short travel dual will be best. It'll be softer on the body, offer better traction through technical stuff and on descents and if you with a mid to high-end bike the weight difference will be small.

Do you have any money left after you have paid for your entry?

 

Speak to some mechanics who followed the Epic and get an idea about frame reliability. The components will be similar between the bikes - so ignore that for now.

I'd say a Specialized Epic or Cannondale Scalpel if you have a deep pocket. But obviously make sure you're comfortable on the bike you do choose!

Does anyone actually do the stats on what bikes are used? I'd love to see the actual data. Just going by the profile pic burry had, I doubt grandstand did it.

and I don't mean, ja anthems are the most common but a lot of spesh epics too.

 

Maybe bicycling could have got some student with a clipboard to write it all down at the prologue start. or Tread magazine hired an intern.

Thanks for the info - this forum is really a wealth of information and I'm sure I will use it over the coming year

 

I think I've narrowed it down to an Epic, Anthem or Scalpel - now I must just get a good sceond hand one at a decent price... Will probably have to use the trusty old HT to train in the meantime while my Credit Card recovers from the entry fee!

XTR because of weight. XT because it still looks high specs at half the price of XTR. So settle for SLX.

Sani2c did stats and Giant and Specialized came out tops for bikes used.

 

I'd get a Giant Anthem X1 - great bike at an excellent price. Cajees quote R22500. The new Anthem (like the costly Spesch Epic) offers a more relaxed seating position than the old version, and is relatively light. The UK bike mags just love it.
