Mamparra...hate to rainon your parade....BUT

the website states....

"Special viewing equipment allows the police to scan recovered items and to liase with Micro Asset Tracking SA to access client contact details. The database is accessible to the authorities on a 24/7 basis. "

now where in SA will you get :

(1) the SAPS to actually respond in a decent time to your stolen property??

(2) The SAPS to actually have equipment & training to do the scanning etc.

I'd love to live in a society wher this would work...but alas...definately not in SA...

Save your money and use it on chains & locks etc. etc. {more practical in our country where security is your own concern}

Police that work at the found stollen property stores were trained about 2 years ago and most detectives have access to the lights used to read Data dot.

It DOES work in SA as the guys that work with stolen cars get regular successes with data dot.Suspects are often arrested at border post with stolen cars because of Data dot.its been arround for a long time in SA.

I agree on the DOT system possibly working on stolen cars (especially at border posts etc.) These are higher profile items....

But for the average Joe Soap in Putsonderwater?? I don't think so...

I'm also not slating the Police either....they do try and most of the "problems" comes from their bosses etc. in any event.

My point is: For stolen bikes and such...I'm not too confident that this system will ever work...perhaps it is beacuse there is such a low recovery rate on stolen bicycles...they keep in circulation  (just have good look at what type of bikes the "general workforce rise with on your way to work??? There is no way that a wage earner could drive anything in the R4000 - R10 000 price range?? How do they do it...)

It would be great if the DOT id system could be widely applied and checked in some sort of routine way (i.e road blocks??)

I agree if you are at one of the bigger towns then it can work but not at the smaller places.

If it has the dots on it and a cop checks it it will get tracked back to you even if they spray paint it.

My Hi-fi equipment at home has it on and my car and some electricall stuff and i need to paint it on other stuff to.

At least if its stolen and recoverd i can ID my goods.

I never thought of putting it on my bike.Embarrassed

Besides, notice how many men are cycling on pink ladies bikes. Surely didn't buy the bike and yet nobody stops them to ask...Why would anyone then bother to scan micro dotted bikes?

A dot on a bike hahaha we need a mini satellite tracker one that the size of a pea and can be hidden inside the frame, or maybe.. Just lock your bike with a HUGE padlock !

"Thieves will not know what items have been marked with Datadots or in how many places these items have been marked."

Neither will the police unfortunately...

but if you see you bike being ridden by another person you can take it to the police there and then and have it cleared.

But as soon as the insurance pays people don't care what happens to their stuff anyway.
