Hello all...

 

Had a moment last night looking the bike over, making mental notes about what probably needs to be serviced/looked at soonish etc. - and then realised, I've never asked anyone to look at my wheelset?

 

Which had me wondering - what maintenance, if any, needs to be performed on your wheels? Should they be taken in to have bearings looked at? Spokes tightened/tensioned?

 

Or is this a case of not fixing something that aint broke? Having said that though - I'm convinced that the reason I so seldom need to replace componentry on my bike is because I'm meticulous with cleaning/lubing/oiling/checking/servicing them - surely the same should apply to wheelsets?

If they bearrings feel smooth and the wheels run true, then there is nothing to service I think. If the bearrings feel a bit rough.... replace them as soon as possible, especially if you do not use sealed bearrings as the cones wear out then as well.

Get the hubs checked from time to time. Worn bearings and inners can cause irrepairable damage if left for too long.

 

Then go and ride and drink some beer.

With each wash, you remove your wheels...right?

Then spin them in your hand, holding onto the axle, not the skewer. The bearings will tell you if they need TKC or not. If you've ridden through a river like they show on TV, immediately repack the bearings. They don't show that on TV.

 

Further, if the wheels don't wobble, leave the spokes alone.

Hello all...

 

Did a thread search about wheel maintenance, and found my own...Embarrassed

 

Think the time has come... Recently popped a new Crossmark on the front wheel - took her out for a bit of bo-jangles, and somethings funny in the land of Garp.

 

Looking down on the wheel at the fork/stanchion "arch" as I'm riding, keeping an eye on the edge of the tyre - I notice definite sideways movement as the wheel rotates...

 

This is trickier to explain than I figured - but hope you get my gist. THe edge of the tyre (as it forms the line with it spinning) is not running straight - but swings in and out as I ride...

Checked the QR etc - wheel is tied in properly, so something is not lekker.

 

When I lift the front wheel up - spin it and then carefully look at where the rim runs past the pads (I ride with V-brakes) - I also notice a slight deviation...

 

So 2 questions:

 

1.) Does this mean that the wheel is out of true - since I'm not entirely sure what the signs would be - barring of course a very-noticeably pretzeled wheel like that time I accidentally rode my bmx down two flights of steps Cry [moer, dit was seer!]

 

2.) Does the LBS only need the wheels - or would they prefer to check how things align when positioned on the bike - i.e should I take the whole bike in?

By the way...

 

I'm running Cane Creek Zonos SS wheels...

So the spokes tighten on the inside of the wheel - see pics...

Not sure if this method is common at all?

 

Will this make a difference in regards to which LBS I should take them too?

Your tyre may need to be trued, I've got the same problem at the moment. LBS can sort it out, might be a good idea to get them to true the wheel while you are at it. A little bit of sideways movement is normal. They can true it without the frame.

Am I correct in that you're suggesting that a tyre could need truing as well as a wheel/rim? Didn't know that - will have the LBS check it out...
