We also forget that a lot of the time the high prices come from the manufacturers themselves and they just pass this on to the shops who need to also put their bit of markup on top of this. Can someone in the industry maybe explain if the actual costs of developing and manufacturing bikes are really so high?

Every week the same thing. Go look at the $ prices on the net and then say that the local prices are high. They are mostly the same (give or take 5% or so) as the $ prices. This is how much bikes cost.

If you think your LBS is ripping you off/cant afford what you want, then go buy it off the net/second hand/back of a truck and stop whining.

I agree that bikes arent cheap but startin a thread about this every week will get you guys nowhere. This isnt a new thing, Bikes are expensive and they'll just get worse. Start saving now if you want/have to have a '10 bike.

I'm in the industry. I agree bike prices has gone up but so has everything else also.

Its definately not on to say a retailer is ripping you of because of high prices, most are cutting heavily on markups to make a sale and to just keep head above water.

Do some research see what it cost to get stock in a shop and carry real basic running cost- shops arent there to rip cyclist of. Most shop owners do it because of the passion for the sport.

There are much are better industries to rip people of and make alot of moola.

Why are there so many shops closing the doors if they were making alot of money?

Maybe rather say thank you the next time for service or free knowledge gained from a cycle shop.. If your not happy with the service from a particular shop move on and get one thats good at what they're doing..

Support local it will only make things better for both parties.

No' date=' the standard bikes I can't even afford!![/quote']

Ok just checking because some people HAVE to have XTR/DuraAce/Mavic Carbone/hand made italian frame with custom spray job etc etc and then moan about the price.

If you cant afford a bike with ultegra, then get 105. It will technically do the same job.

Bikes are expensive, but so is everything else. If you want carbon, titanium etc it's going to cost ya. Unfortunately it is just k@k and betaal Pinch, nobody is ripping anybody else off in general IMHO.

Also people's tastes are getting expensive, there' more joe soaps riding pro replica bikes than ever before.......when I got into MTB there was like one guy who had a bike with a XTR group and he was sponsored, everyone had mid range stuff........now we all want (me inlcuded) the same stuff that Sauser and Burry ride.........

Buy or build up a 5 grand singlespeed....the most fun you will have......

I suppose because everything else is so expensive.

Playing sport, or having a hobby, eating, drinking, working, school fees, - everthing is way too expensive.

Try a roudn of golf, or buy your kid a cricket kit from scratch, running shoes @ R 1000 pp.

Doesnt stop, def not just bicycles.

You pay what you can afford, or pay for what you want - even if you cannot afford it.

I bought a cheap bike (R 10 500) - I started paying a deposit in Nov 07, paid off until April last year, when only I could take delivery. Only way I could do it, but the wait was worth it. I dont need carbon or titanium - for now!!Wink
