Why are Bicycles so expensive?

Hi guys,

I've got a concern and that is on the price of Bicycles in South Africa. Our suppliers and retailers are killing our community and country with this high prices. How do they expect the sport to pick up when when the cyclist cannot even get a good bike, let alone enter a fun ride. Come on guys, let re-think this.....

I am also concerned about the prices. Unfortunately I am not in the high income bracket and I do not see myself there soon (Wrong career at the wrong time). I do think I have some cycle abillity, but for how long I will be able to keep up with the "Killing" prices, I do not know. I think pretty soon they are going to rename the sport of cycling to FROPF (For Rich Only Paupers Forbidden)... Even buying consumable stuff like chains is getting out of hand!

To make you fuming even more about bicycle prices, try to figure this out:

You can buy a super bike like a Honda CBR 600 or a Yamaha R6 for a bit more than a top end road bike. The amount of technology that goes into these motorbikes is crazy!!! You can go a bit lower and buy a non-superbike for the same as a road bike.....non of the road bikes comes even close to the motor bikes technology/labor etc. HOW DO YOU JUSTIFY A BICYCLE PRICE!!!????Confused

I agree with you. The agents here need to re-think of a new strategy of how to make money than relinning their pockets. PPA need to bring down the price of an entry fee so that more people can start cycling. Look at the cars that PPA reps are driving and the houses they are living in, this all comes from the high cost of entry fees at races. Money attracks the pros and NOT the entry level cyclist. We need to promote cycling and NOT keep cyclist away due to high entry fees

how expensive are your PPA races, R60? Up here you do not get anything below R120 and that is without road closure.Mampara2009-04-09 02:52:47

Because we pay the stupid high prices. Don't buy and the price has to drop. But as long as ppl are paying the prices will keep going up.

Oh yes and then I can say look at what I can afford.......... without actualy saying so.

That's right.....PPA is sitting with millions in their kitty for development. Enough with development and start focusing on more cycle tours during winter as well.
