Where do you guys think is the best place to get tests done like your vo2 max etc.I was thinking about going to sports science institute of south Africa. Is there an equivalent in JHB?

Get hold of a power meter and do your best efforts for 5sec, 1min, 5min and 60min (20min if you aren't confident in pacing a 60min TT).

That will tell you all you need to know about your performance on a bike.

If im not mistaken the 60 min TT will tell me my power threshold? Then from there I can work out all my zones.

Who can give me a programme and test all my other abillities?

Daniel, Bruce is one of THE experts in SAon powertraining.  Couldn't talk to a better guy if you are in the North.

This is what a power curve looks like (this year vs. last year).  It takes all you efforts into account, not just one!

PS, my current 20 minute point is WAY under last year's.  Damn.

That is correct.  60min TT will give you your Functional Threshold Power (FTP) which correlates well with power at Lactate Threshold.

The other durations tell you how much power your other energy systems in your body produce:

5min power correlates with pVO2Max

1min power indicates anaerobic capacity

5sec power indicates neuro-muscular power

These are the real world numbers on the bike - not something done in a lab etc.  This provides you with your true capabilities on a bike, and provides information as to what your strengths and weaknesses are, what your potential as a cyclist is, and what type of events will suit you best.

All you need to do is ride these durations as hard as possible.  No rocket science, just real world information.

You may need to practice them a few times to learn how to pace the efforts, particularly 5min and 20min.

Embarrassed thanks for the kind words!

The only problem with using the mean max curve is that you may not have done the particular durations as hard as possible.  Unless you specifically go do 5sec, 1min, 5min, and 20min the numbers in the mmp curve might be efforts from say a 30min effort, of which 20min were your best 20min so far.

Bruce: Do you do such tests for guys/girls not owning a powertap?

Sure, I have loan units available.

Send me a note at "bruce dot diesel AT gmail dot com" if you would be interested in testing yourself.  Wireless powertap is just a change of wheel on the bike and you are good to go.

Ah, that must be why my figures are so lowWink

Been doing the short stuff, but too scared of the 20min FTP test.  I know what they're going to say... It doesn't lieOuch

Thanks, I will send you a mail.

What is the point of doing the test, when you dont have a power meter ?? All you gain is some useless knowledge of your power output at different times ??? Then you go back to training with a HRM

I thought of doing a test and after some time do another test to see how i improved. Then i can work on the areas were I need improvement. One tend to train the stuff were you are good at.

does this make sense?

"I would love to train with power every day, but the lotto is not going my way"Big%20smile
