Okay, so I have been advised to put Conti Race King and Mountain King on my bike for a multi day but looking at CRC its not that easy because there are a host of varieties in that:

Mountain King

Mountain King Protection

Mountain King Supersonic

Mountain King UST

Race King

Race King Protection

Race King Supersonic

Race King UST

How do I decide which ones to get???

Thanks in advance.

protection have stronger sidewalls.

Will they work on UST rims as tubeless? Oh and what do I go for: 2.2 or 2.4?

If you are running a tubeless set-up on your bike, wouldnt it make sense to choose the UST versions?

I have the Mountain King 2.2" UST and quite like them. Lets see what they are like in a wet Tokai this weekend...

If/when I get another set, I would probably get a 2.4" front and a 2.2" rear. They are not particularly wide.

Dont forget this new SAD500 story when you order online. Add a few hundred Rand to the cost of your order for the clearing agent.

The Conti 2.2s are narrower than normal 2.2s - almost looks like a 2.0 or a 2.1.

I would go for the Mountain King UST 2.2 on the front, and a Race King UST on the back. They weigh a bit, but they are tough, and strong and grip like crazy!

While on this topic.

i fitted Conti Mountain Kings 2.4 to my XC machine yesterday.

when it started raining i went to Tokai.

had them inflated to 30psi front and 35 rear....

these bloody things just gripped on everything

i was faster in the wet with this stuff than in the dry with my CrossMarks.

even though they much wider than the CrossMarks, they roll very easy.

I bought the cheaper wire ones, cause they are on my spare set of rims...

i was also sceptical as to the sales talk " these thing give lots of grip"

IT WORKS, IT GRIPS. that slippery climb in the fairy garden, was just ridden up, in the rain, i thought to myself WTF!!!!!

i paid R500 for 2....

It holds a lot of air

FTF... would u suggest 2.4s then? Whats the major diff handling and performance-wise? I am going to be using them for general, marathon and multi day.

blah blah...

Now tell us the relevant bit... Did you ride the pathetic bridge, and if so, did it make you feel more or less technically competent on the bike?

How do you work out tis physical size of the tyres - I would hate the 2.4's to touch the frame - is there a size chart sothat we can work it out? The largest I have run is 2.2

HAHAHA, nice one TNT!!! LOL

That bridge is eventually going to leave out of its own accord...Tongue

As for conti tires, i have a 2.3 Vertical with protection. Grips really well front and back (universal) and has worn really well. The protection is nice if you in rocky areas, but it it ain't light...

oh' date=' one other thing

try to keep to the same size front and rear.

or you start messing around with the bikes head angle.

2.4 in front and 2.1 in the rear slakens your head angle by 1 deg.

Never heard this before...

I know that if you run a 80mm fork and then change to a 100mm fork, it affects the geometry slightly. I can't imagine a slightly wider tyre will do anything quite as dramatic as that.

I dont know you or your riding style...

The 2.4" would be heavier than 2.2" obviously - not gonna like that on long rides.

The 2.4 would give you more grip in the corners - only really needed if you are doing gnarly riding. The Mountain King is pretty grippy as is.

Mountain King for steering control. For rolling resistance, the Race King is suggested for the rear. I personally like some grip on the rear for short technical climbs where things could get slippery - your terrain should dictate your choices.

2.2" front and rear is probably fine.

In my humble opinion...

Thanks a mil!! I have mailed someone who is going on the Tuli trip about tyre choice and he suggested this combo based on his Epic experience and the lack of punctures during this event.

2.2 Mountain King UST and 2.2 Race King UST it is!!

Thanks guys for your feedback Star
