I agree that there are shops/importers who are ripping us off blind, but the fact is that South Africa is far away from the real economic powerhouses and on top of all that, it's a small market here.

If we all supported local industry then perhaps things would change..... very slowly!

Wait until you get something from a far away land and it doesn't quite function the way it should. It took me over a year to get a R10 000 camera sorted because no one here was interested in my problem.

I will never buy from am overseas based company again.

I tried to buy a bell sweep XC wanted a medium in black and carbon

Tried 6 shops no one had stock tried 4 others by phone also no stock

They did all tell me the same story that suppliers were out of stock and it would be a 3 to 8 week wait.

Also that the new stock would be the sweep R 2009 with visor and price would be higher

Prices in shops on the XC's they did have ranged from R1550 to 2050 which was a bit of a surprise at such a variation.

I bought the new sweep 2009 from CRC fro 1150 and should have it this week

I want to support the local industry and build a relationship with my LBS's as I enjoy chatting to people in the shops and I like to look and see stuff before I buy.

But there is a trade off at how much extra you have to pay a hundred rand here and ther I can live with(surely this is a trade off for all those little favours and valuable information and knowledge you get from your LBS) but when things get over double its a bit much.

camelbak mule is another example 1300 rand here about 820 at crc I will get one in june when I go over as again its a big saving

maybe there is no right or wrong here as each person decides what they are willing to pay based on the variables involved with the purchase.

Just my newbie perspective on my observations so far

Wakey wakey!! rather support the SA industry.........why make someone who will never put anything into SA cycling rich?????

That is one of the silliest remarks I've ever seen!

South African importers are screwing consumers blind! They get away with this because not everybody is in a position to order directly from international suppliers' date=' while others are worried about the risk.

I am a proud parrallel importer (even if I only import for myself). Sooner or later there will be enough people like me to force local importers to change their behaviour.

Personally, I am appaled at the increases in costs.

Anyone who read my issue with Continental tyre prices will know, they have probably risen 70% - nobody, but nobody can tell me continental has had a 30 - 40% price increase, Asian and European markets never do, I also import millions of rand in heavy structural equipment out of Europe and Asia, they have increases of 5%, maybe.

Anyway, the local market is on its way out in my opinion, there are serious issues with the supply chain of product, distributors and shops are just increasing prices daily to cover a "diminishing daily financial intake", customers are not stupid and realise this, so they have become increasingly militant, and are importing themselves, refusing to support the retailers (as I) - Anytime I buy something in a shop I feel as if I have made a poor purchase, I dont or seldom feel happy, because I know its at a high premium.

When I started cycling, I bought from a new shop at full retail, knowing full well I was been fleeced, but I justified it by thinking I was "helping the young lad get started" - he could have just asked me for a nonrefundable loan, it would have been more honest - well anyway, he folded before my tyres had worn down and I was left with a bitter taste of making "a donation" to his business - these days I only make donations when I get a tax deductable - no gifts anymore - retailers need to sharpen up smart, I dont see many retailers lasting winter.

I've purchased plenty from CRC. Never had a problem. I recently bought two pairs of shoes and a camelbak from CRC for the same price that one pair of the shoes cost from my LBS, and that included shipping with Parcel Force. I'm all for internet shopping, 'cos I'm damn tired of being fleeced locally.
