This year's Epic was a seriously dusty affair, and my XTR Dual Control shifters became really "crunchy". My bike shop recommended blasting Clean Streak into them via various orifices; this certainly worked as heaps of dust and crap poured out of them. But I's like to open the covers to do the job properly, apply lube, etc.

Can anyone help with removing the covers of the new XTR Dual Control levers, and an ABC on servicing them correctly? I have trawled the Internet, but cannot find any reference or service manual on these shifters. Removing the tiny Philips screws doesn't seem to loosen anything....the plastic covers just stay where they are. (LHS different from RHS).

Once you have removed the screws the plastic covers slide off. They do tend to stick a bit but if you work carefully you will be able to remove them. Have done mine on many occasions.

Thanks fellows - I don't think I removed all the screws.

1.  Any comments on the liberal use of Clean Streak inside the working parts of these Dual Control Shifters, given they are so extremely complicated?

2.  And then just lube with WD40 or simular once the Clean Streak has dried off?

Your strategy is a good home remedy.

I assume Clean Streak is an aerosol can similar to WD 40 or so?

I used to clean my shifters like that. However, I've just acquired a new toy - an ultrasonic cleaning bath and my shifters will go in there from now on...until I tire of removing them, then I'll blast them clean with Q20 again.

There's no need to strip them down, removing the covers is enough.

Edit: I only read your second message now and that makes the Clean Streak issue clearer.

I suggest you skip that step and blast 1/2 a can of silicone lubricant (Q-20) in there until it runs clear.

Whatever you do dont get tempted to open the actual Mechanics of the thing, that is the biggest can of worms ever!! I did it to mine once and I cried for weeks on end. Eventually got it together but a Qualified Barnetts mechanic was there to lend hands.

That was tempting me until I read yours... Bad huh? I was curious about how complicated it could actually be - but the exploded view off the web and your post has had me deciding to not "krap waar dit nie jik nie..."   Tongue

met trane in my oe...Moenie..

I was sitting at my desk with a xt dual controller that wasnt engaging clicks after shifts( the pawls were sticky) so I undid this little screw and pushed one of the springs out to release the tension. In a blink of an eye I had black spots all over my shirt little pieces of shifter was heard falling in all areas of my room and the little megafter I was toying with transformed into something better described as a "kraai-nes" After uttering the list of words that normally bring me a bit of peace starting with jou F*kken D**s van n klein K*K etc etc..

I couldnt ride and had to wait for a mate to help, Like I said, he day done the Barnets Institure of Bicycle technition course.. and Even he told me what a dumbass I was and How many beers I owe him.Wink

Been there, done that. Watch the little ratchets, they are extremely delicate and if you break a tooth, you can kiss the whole thing goodbye. Also watch the little tabs that hold the cover in place. They break pretty easily when forcing it open or closed.Ouch

Ok, I was told by my LBS to remove the shifters and cables, have both sides open and spray Giant de-greaser into them until foam comes out clean the other side, blow dry with compressor and that would do the trick.

My question is, should you lubricate afterwards or do you just leave them like it is then? and if to be lubricate what is the best to use?

JB - your oppinion?

Like I said, blast it with Q-20. That way you clean out the gunk and eliminate getting water in there and lube it all in one.

The compressed air is a good option if you want to make sure it doesn't drip silicone oil onto your carpets.
