I need to replace my 12 year old shimano SPD pedals and wanna stay with Shimano. I have looked at CRC and they have the following:

M520 for R350

M540 for R600

M770 for R690

As far as I can see all these pedals look exacly the same except for the bearing assemblies and as a result the weight, and that doesnt vary by that much. Only 30g between the M520 and the other two.

Is there any reason why one should choose the more expensive ones over the M520?

It's all about the bearings. and how well they are sealed.

But remember, as the pedals develop over the years, they move them down the line. So 520 in 2009 might be the same quality as XTR 10 years ago. This years 770 were the XTRs from 2 years ago and so on.

Ive had the 540's for 4 years now, and not had a days trouble with them.

Cant comment on the 520's but like you say i think they differ on the bearing seals, and they have a collar that you can unscrew with a special Shimano tool and service your self.

My very old M525 pedals are still going strong after about 15 years, and they use the same tool / collar interface so i suppose the 520's should be fine.

The 770's are the XT branded pedals arnt they? My girlfreind rides a set of XT, and they are from what i can see identical to my 540's, just branded as XT.

Save your bucks and go for the 520's!

I really don't wanna spend double if the clipping in and out is gonna feel the same.

If the only difference is the bearings then I will definitely go for

the 520's. I dont ride in the wet a lot and am not afraid to open them

up to clean out the bearings and grease em every now and again if that

is the only difference.

I have the 520's, Have had them for about 2 years and probably have put 5000km plus on them, and Remember I am the ferocious, the terrible the dangerous wait for it...bos..Big%20smile Mine have a little bit of play which Is probably bearings.  and those we can do ourselves cause I still havnt returned the tool to Martin Hatting (Ssssh!!) I borowed it from him in 98'' haha!!

Fleming get them here Unless youre geting more things from CRC, I dont think they cost more here at all. But If you do let me know I want things.Big%20smile

I have 520's on my MTB, my wife has 520's and then I use 505's on my road bike.

520's are lighter than 505's and 540's are lighter than 520's and so it goes on.

My 520's worked through last years mud bath at Hill 2 Hill - they did need some convincing occasionally to clip in after hiking in the mud, but gave no issues there after.

I can safely say I have no complaints and would recommend 520's. Plus they can handle been beaten against rocks, I here egg beaters tend to take exception to such treatment.

Haha, I remember how you ride Bos.

I am actually building up quite a basket of things from CRC so I will probably get them there. Every bit helps get to the magic mark of free transport. Let me know if you wanna make a group order. So far my basket is about R2000.

Never ordered from them before but heard a lot of good things on this forum so I wanna give it a try.
