For a trail bike at this price have a look at the Santa Cruz Chameleon - the guy wants ZAR15k.

Of your two options you mentioned the Merida gets my vote.

The Silverback ain?t bad either and the OnOne is very well price for a bike that will turn heads (Santa Cruz the same)

Thanks guys. This helps a lot, although the options out there are too much!!

What to do, what to do?

Well get on the net and compare the prices with availability, aftersales service and also check which bikes are stocked by your lbs.

Check the exact speck of ALL the parts on the bikes if possible, allot of times you get xt parts, but if you look closely only a LX cassete and chain.

Then look at weight as well, does the bike look nice to you, afterall you must be happy with the purchase and want to ride it.  No use buying the best bike spec wise if you really hate the looks of it.

And go and ride the bikes so you can feel the handling characteristics of each bike, this counts for allot more than the specs you see on paper.

I'll second the on-one. It's been bumped one down on my list of things to buy by a stupidly cheap Morewood frame, but I'll get one as soon as my bank balance recovers...
