What bike do you have? Check that one of your cable housings is not to short. By going through the travel of the bike, it stretches the housing causing ghost shifting...

Are you running Shimano? My NRS with XT rd used to do that. I bought SRAM X9 shifters and RD and have not had a problem since.

on sh*tty DS bikes, yes this happens

cause stupid systems cannot keep the tension in the chain

when the suspension is active..

I don't believe this is likely to be due to your bike being a DS. Normally the RD cable going from the main frame to the rear suspension is in a casing that has sufficient slack, thus the moving of the suspension will have no effect on cable tension.

A problem like this could be as a result of a damaged/worn rear cassette, worn chain, damaged RD or incorrectly calibrated RD.

Anyway what DS do you have?

It is a Specialized FSR XC Comp.

rd = SLX Shaddow

I checked again on the weekend, this is only on rough terrain and when you have it on full suspension open. I was doing about 34km/h then it the ghost shifting happens.

What are you using to clean your bike?

I had the same problem on my bike and was washing with Prepsol BUT failed to lube the rear derailleur after each wash. The prepsol washes the lubricant away. This caused the derailleur to 'stick' between the middle gears.

What I did was after givibg the bike a good wash & cleanimg the derailleur, I oiled the derailleur and then sprayed some water repellent lubricant on (like Q20). That also helped when next washing with Prepsol.

I'm not sure if it was a problem with all FS Spez frames but I heard that the outer for the RD need to be a bit longer then it looks like it needs. Other words, when you build the bike, add a bit more outer then what you think looks nice.

Gremlin does it happen when you are pedaling or free wheeling ?

Pedaling I would look ate the cable as Mampara mentioned, free wheeling I would look at the free hub.

Had that exact problem when I first built my Epic ......

Are we talking a bicycle chain? How long and stretched does it have to be so that it's flexible enough that you skip with it? Sounds bizarre...

If your rear derailleur housing is pulled tight up against the BB part of the frame, this will happen. You need to have quite a big loop of outer cable - well free of the BB - where the cable passes under the frame on its way to the chainstay. Loosen the downtube clamps and see if you can get some free cable to make the loop.
