Or you can just ride as much as possible and protect your ass (Assos, Prep, Milking Balm, whatever works for you). Surgical Spirits is just going to dry your ass out and cause cracks. Did I just say that?

mileage on the bike is the only answer.

 

Assos are good I also use Giordana, chamois creme can help but hours spent training is the only answer.

One word: ASSOSWink

 

I reckon only 5-10% of the entire epic field have Assos.

 

There is another way. Ride...ride more...ride longer...and then some more riding. Your ass will get used to it over time. Definately use chammy cream. Use clean shorts everyday. And treat your bum before breakouts occur. Use some bacrtoban and fissan paste as an overnight mask.

thanks for all the advise. getting cracks near my hole can't be nice (friday humar), long week, i will try the chaos cream. doing lots of riding in the week, did 9 hours so far and still the week end ride coming up, having a 'jol' on the X1, from a hard tail to full suspension what a difference! has any one serviced their bike at Rietvlei bike shop? any good?Confused

Unless you have deep pockets and a second bike I would advise you to learn to service your own bike. That way you will at least be able to do any minor repairs on the run during a race. Otherwise you will be bikeless while the bike is in the shop.
