...a special chain tool they had to buy for the new 11spd. It cost R3k!

imagine how much a multi tool will cost with that tool on. No wonder they don't make MTB parts.

Sad really. Its the same tool that TotalCycling sells for R1300, and even at that price it caused quite a stink overseas because it is a necessity for the new 11 speed chains.

Simply put ..... kempekkernoglia just does not have the technology to manufacture dependable long lasting equipment out of soft pewter and carbon fibre offcuts form the Japanese manufacturers.

Campy, Shimano, Sram....who cares!!!! I step on the pedals, the chain rotates and creates forward motion via the reak cassette and voila......I move. I fail to see the point of saying  "If you want quality expect to pay".

I cannot see a justification in the R20k difference between bottom of range groupsets and top of range. I can buy a lot of Sora groupsets for the cost of one Dura-ace. Or is it again a matter of "My shorts do not fill out so nicely, so let me go for a nice filling groupset (read penis extension)".

Now that I have thrown the cat amongst the pigeons......someone please enlighten me to what the diffs between Sora and Dura-ace, apart from frigging weight and Speed rating. Do the cogs last longer on the cassette? Are the bearings now from germany and not china?

I am rather ignorant re these things, simply because they do not seem to make any difference to 80% of riders.

I recently bought some sora FD+RD's for a bike that I am building.

I looked for some original campy stuff but the kit that was available at a half decent price was cr@p. The good campy stuff was right out of my price range. So the bike is now not original. Who will know - nobody here really gives much of a toss anyway.

Anyway I have been pleasantly surprised - in future I am not going to pi$$ around looking for the "best" - I am going to spend my R400 and go with Sora - it works. It looks OK and it's a bargain.

Apart from the obvious weight advantages, I think that Dura Ace does have several improvements over Sora. I think that even though it is lighter, you'll find that it's more durable and stronger. It will be built to higher tolerances. It has an extra gear and I don't believe Sora has progressed yet to external bearings for the crankset, which is believed by most to be a superior setup.

However, if you're comparing, say, 105 to Dura Ace or Veloce to Record, I think you'll find there is very little difference besides the weight and the price tag.

But we're straying a bit off topic here. My LBS says they paid R3k for a chain tool from the local agents, when it's been noted that the exact same tool can be bought on Totalcycling for R1 300.

This suggests gouging by the local importers, and it doesn't matter if the product is bicycle parts or furniture, exotic or otherwise, entry-level or top of the range...

I have to agree, I think the "middle man" in SA (in many industries including cycling) is taking the p1ss.

Unless there is something that I don't understand about the whole import business??

In my own humble opinion, anything Italian is expensive. Alfa Romeo servicing cost an arm and a leg. Has anyone seen the prices quoted on probikekit.com? Recently, the Dura Ace 7900 was going for R12800.
