Electronic gears

Hi Guys

 

What do you think of electronic gears? Apparently both Campy and Shimano are testing their respective models. I can't see the logic in gears like these, as they obviously have to have batteries that need regular replacement. Are the mechanical systems out there not responsive enough?

I don't agree, I think they're fine if you're willing to  use them.

Pezcyclingnews interviewed a rider who was using the Campag system and he said it was great... I don't think it's fair to compare Mavic's old system to newer systems by the two big-guns.

The electronic systems are supposed to eliminate effort in gearshifting, although I personally don't mind.

I guess they innovate somewhere else, since

1) The pervasiveness of carbon/Ti in componentry can only go so far

2) How many more cogs do you want?

 

Interesting question, the batteries one...

I like the mechanical part of bicycling. If they want to go high tech, why don't just go full out and bring out belt drive bikes with internal gearing on all bikes like the have on some European town bikes.

Traditionalists?????? The basic bicycle design has been unchanged for the past 120 odd years. It is heralded as the most efficient design ever. The basic design is the design of the traditionalists. Other designs are inovative. Steel bikes are still seen by the puurists as the only "real" frame material.

If you look at the prototypes it is clear that campaq is miles ahead in their design of the electronic gearshifting mechanism! Just read the articles on pezcyclingnews.com.
