Ill give my take on it after my first MTB ride.

All I can say at this stage is that on the road it can be pretty easy if you just suck wheel' date=' but that also depends on the group you are riding with. If you are prepared to do your bit it is mega tough.

Wanna come try that MTB out with us on Saturday? Longish ride (probably about 4-5 hours) but nothing hectically technical.

Brackendowns (Sharondale nursery) out to the cellphone tower in Walkerville and then over Wattle climb through Drumblade and back .....

Would love 2 BB, but as you know its the WWRR on Sat.

Besides that I would feel better to ease into the MTB thing, rather than go ride for 4 hrs for the first time. Have to ensure bike set up is right, gears work ok etc..

Keep me posted, will join in near future - sounds a nice ride that one.

Eish

I purchased a MTB recently - in fact I only got it on Fri. Havent yet ridden it except for a few laps round the front garden when I got home.

Now I am so frightened of this tough cr@p I have gotten myself into' date=' I will have to post in classifieds.

Brand new - done 100m's- Silverback Alpine XL

Tubeless conversion

Shimano pedals

Bar ends, and I'll also throw in the remainder of the sealant I got back from LBS.

Bargain buy!!

Why if this thing is so difficult is it one off or the fastest growing sport around?

I see plenty people enjoying it, they in no shape at all (ok - round is a shape too).

Isnt the degree of difficulty/enjoyment directly linked to the fitness, pace you raide, skills you have, where you ride?

On the road it certainly is.

All levels can go out and enjoy a mtb ride - the differences in skills only became vastly apparent when you turn up the pace.

Exactly, I am a new cyclist, only started in Feb, am 38 and was very overweight (124 kg but that has changed a bit!), and I managed to ride my first MTB race, the Big Induna, a couple of weeks ago.

OK, so, I didn't win. Was never going to. Had a blast, finished and will ride it again next year.

I don't know how it compares to road riding as I have never ridden on tar but I am sure that's just as hard, the road guys seem to go much faster and cover much more distance.

Don't sell your bike, enter a race and have fun. It may be hard but it's not impossible.

OK let me know, if you just maybe feel up to it there is also the option on Sunday I will be out at 7 doing a 40k out and back MTB (towards Heineken brewery then to Walkerville) under 2 hours and no technical stuff that I can think of .....

Sorry BB, this sunday I have another committment , involves no cycling though. Will have to pass on the invite.

But that sounds like the type of ride I need to start with.

Bollocks. MTB isn't harder. You just needed a different skill set (which you can learn) and you used different muscle groups' date=' and some of the same muscles in a different way to how you use them on the road. Lack of conditioning for a particular type of exercise doesn't make the exercise harder.  [/quote']

Quite true. Even though I spend a lot of time training on the road, 3-4hour road races still kill me compared to MTB. Muscles react very differently to consistent pace pedalling (often in constant positions) on the road than they do to the way they're thrown around inconsistenly on the mountain.

I never get cramps XC racing, only on the road.
